    Cooking with convection ovens

After reading Mendip's nice steak pie thread, I saw a convection oven for sale in Tesco's today for 919 baht. I am tempted to get one but I need some persuading as I've never used one before and I've never seen one used before (apart from in Mendip's thread). So, a few questions for the Teakdoor cooking community...

What do you think of convection ovens and what are your experiences with them?

What can you cook with them and what can't you cook with them?

What are their pros and cons?

    TIA

I don't have one because I think they're too small to be truly multi-purpose, but I have thought about getting one for the sake of a quick and nicely cooked half chicken or spuds (say).
My local khao mun gai shop also does roast chicken pieces and she uses one. I have not bought a piece yet, but they look great.
I'd say go for it. Do a chook and spuds, or a half chook, spuds and pumpkin, let us know how it went.

I was impressed with Mendip's pies and how they turned out...makes me very tempted indeed to get one.

I think I've seen a model that doubles as a dehydrater...that would be a nice feature to preserve excess seasonal fruit or make fruit leather. Maybe all models have that feature, like rice cookers that you can cook a cake in?

Currently I have (regretfully) a microwave-convection oven combo. The oven feature is lousy as it has many hot and cold spots when baking. Can do ribs or a half chook, spuds etc, but I have to constantly turn and rotate things to get even cooking. And it's not much bigger than the thing in the OP.
(writing about that mistake of a purchase, I've almost convinced myself to get one of the ones like in the OP).

The infrared ones are good value at c1000THB but i am angling for one of the counter top mini ovens which have a rotisserie - c4-5K THB gets you a big one with double glass front. I suspect i'd get both.

I swear by ours now and use it all the time. Cost about 2500 Baht on one of those tv sales offers.

We use metal pie dishes (as in the pie thread) for oven chips, or if going healthy for baked veggies sprinkled with olive oil. Wrap a mackerel or chicken piece in foil and can be baked alongside the veggies.

I just checked in the kitchen and there's a shoulder of lamb roasting in ours right now (I'm off to work tomorrow so getting spoiled! ). I'll get a pic later.

They heat up immediately but the downside is the size. A big roast could be a problem.

I see no reason why they wouldn't work for casserols in a pyrex dish.

My daughter is hassling me to bake a cake with her but I have no idea how that will turn out (I am a man... honest). That will have to be next time I'm home. Maybe a new thread in the planning...

A question that just popped into my head, are convection ovens quicker at cooking than normal ovens (smallish table top ovens)? Or just the same?

The one in Tesco's was 1300w. Is that a 'standard' size/rating? Is it enough? Or is bigger better?

Get one of the Betty Crocker type premix packets at Big C and you can't go wrong. Bugger buying all the ingredients and measuring them.

^^^ I would say, as with most things in life, bigger is better. Apart from a few obvious exceptions.

Can see no wattage on ours but I guess its about mid-range and seems to handle everything.

My usual tactic with this kind of thing is to look through reviews in Amazon and then see if the better rated items are on Lazada.

I wouldn't describe anything posted so far as an oven, but they are decent value for money as long as you understand the limitations when compared to a real oven.

For someone like you who thinks baking is following the instructions on a can of Fray Bentos ...then yes, it's a small oven.

    Maybe depends on the model.

Having said that, I've seen a method to produce black garlic in a basic rice cooker. Making black garlic is a similar process to making fruit leather, insofar as the "cooking" process is concerned.
