I bought a Daweoo halogen oven/Air fryer from Robert Dyas in Bromley.
Its brilliant. The chicken thighs I cooked in the HO were comparable to KFC's they were that good. It has boosted my cooking skills no end. I am a convert.

To segue the thread will it work on Thai electricity. Or should I buy a local one ?

Thai electricity is contaminated with plastic particles and fishsauce, better buy special Thai-grade appliances which have the E-cleaner built in.

    A filter wouldn't cut it then ?
I was thinking the stuff from the air con could be re-used.

We got a free dry-air fryer with something or other a couple of years ago. I think it may have been when I bought my main oven.

Anyway, we still haven't used it.

Yeah its gay but if you are secure in your sexuality it doesn't bother you.

I'm interested as it will have the E cleaner to take out the plastic particles and the fish sauce which contaminates Thai electricity.
Big question: What about chili sauce ?
Perhaps if licked the bare wires I could taste the electricity. Sounds like a project to me.

Due to the harping of my wife on my love of deep frying and her wanting me to cut back, I've been comparing the "air fryers" and the convection ovens. But I love wet battered fish and onion rings and I don't see either of these contraptions being able to do those well, if at all. Can anyone confirm if they've tried wet battered items in an air fryer? Results?

The air fryer onion rings recipes and results I've looked at online don't impress. I don't want breaded baked onion rings.

    Sad...

Better, but still not my ideal fried fish.

edit: By the way chitty what is the wattage on your air fryer? I was looking at a "Big Boss" 16qt air fryer, but 1300 watts seems underpowered for that big of an air fryer.

    $80 US

editII: That doesn't really seem big enough to be 16 qt either. Not sure though.

SKkin, that Big boss is an OTTO, NevtheCam is the OTTO master - he's done a thread on it. Leave the frying to Lulu he's all over steaks.

That's the convection oven thread. Big Boss is an air fryer.

Like I posted on Nev's thread I don't really see a big difference.

"I don't really like to touch meat with my fingers." She's a lot of fun in the bedroom.

I have yet to find video of anyone doing wet battered fish or onion rings...

I don't think there is a difference just that consumers in the West are suckers for Healthy words in the product description, and of course charge 4 times as much. get DillSuperPost to mail you an OTTO over

The one in the video and my Otto are very similar. The only difference I see is that the one in the video uses halogen light as a heat source while my Otto uses a standard (old fashioned) heating ring.

I think that could be the reason. Call it an oil-less fryer for people in countries who might think they consume too much oil but still want to "fry" and eat healthy "fried food". LOL

But air fryer really is a misnomer. It uses air, sure, but it does not fry at all. No oil = no fry.

^^Thanks...but without having tasted it just don't seem the same as deep fried with a wet batter. Using this one as example:

I've just watched the video in post 38. It's the same kind of design as Chitty's in the OP. That design style looks more like a deep fryer (so I can understand why they call it an air "fryer") but it is just the style of the container. The cooking is still just heating up and cooking with hot air so again not really frying. Just marketing.

All these so called No Oil Fryers work best with a very light spray of oil else you don't get the effect, just a small amount which is negligible in terms of fat intake but gives a roasted result

Talking about onion rings earlier today gave me a craving. So I deep fried some popcorn shrimp and a batch of onion rings. I just can't see an air fryer or convection oven giving me this kind of crispy, delicious goodness.

Sorry, no pic of the popcorn shrimp. They were straight out of the freezer section.

The farm stand didn't have my favorite Whistlestop onion ring batter available yet, so I used some of this:

If you want a deep fried result, get a deep frier.

If I bow to the wife's pressure I already know how this will go down. A week or two after getting an air frier I'll hear, "we don't have enough room for both friers" and then the battle lines will be drawn. She's right about the not enough room though. Guess I'll just promise not to use the deep frier as much.

    edit: meant deep fryer

    WTF...

That's why it's best not to clean them out, just let the flavoured oils and fats fuse with the next concocation.

Tonight's beer snacks is spring rolls with three different levels of chilli .

Looks like your equipment does a better job than Otto. Do you know what the wattage is on your machine chitty?

Not sure how many liters but this one is a 1700 watt model that is 5.2 quart if I remember correctly. Can't find the damn book on it at the moment.

Good for tater tots, frozen fries, chicken wings, jalapeno poppers and such. Absolutely sucks for fried fish and fresh potato chips/fries. Also did a personal pan sized pizza in it that I was pretty happy with...seemed tastier than one done in the regular oven. Frozen popcorn shrimp comes out acceptable. I did get and EVO mister to put some oil on items being air-fryed which seemed to help quite a bit.

I received it as an Xmas gift so thankfully didn't spend any of my money on it.

Still have the deep fryer too. Told the wife the deep fryer is staying for fish and onion rings.
