    TD 2021.

Everybody getting ready to sit around and watch a lad make a toasted sandwich on a Friday night.

    Possibly pea based.

Possibly burning his fingers and smashing the koont'ing thing off the ground.

    I'm in.

I'm planning to demonstrate why a grilled cheese sandwich is called "grilled" as an example of why they're called grilled sandwiches.

My challenge to you will be to demonstrate why there's a Brit dish called "Spotted Penis" (I'm too polite to use the word "dick", I don't want to offend our admin, Nev).

I have been known to get a late night delivery after a doing last call at the pub but not so much over the last year as I have not been able to spend anytime out so of late it is what ever I can throw together.

Seems questioning why a fried sarnie is called grilled got the dumpy TEFLr upset

The ‘Dick’ in Spotted Dick seems to come from the shortened Old English names for pudding: puddog or puddick. In Scotland it is often called Spotted Dog Pudding.

Still waiting for the fried sarnie explanation Topper.

I've done it. It starts out warm and exciting but soon gets too hot and it's almost impossible to get an even cook. Not recommended.

I am staying up beyond my usual bedtime just to see how the Mendip sandwich toastie works out. Better than Cliffhangers.

Right, whilst the children are arguing over who's got the smallest dick in the Doghouse, i will commit the cardinal sin of posting in the drunk food thread whilst sober but only to get it back into the food groove.

A quick beef kofta pitta with salad, onion, toms, mayo, hot sauce and green chili sauce. Don't care what it looks like it hit the spot.

I've never seen a spotted penis...it must be a European thing. I can explain why a grilled cheese is called grilled, however it would require pictures, flowcharts, a history lesson and things that really nobody here gives a rat's fuck about.

A Gyro? It does look tasty. There's tons of shwarma places here but none use pita bread and proper tzatziki sauce that I've found.

I shared the box of Leo with my mate last night, but to be honest wasn't really in the mood for it. Drinking six bottles of beer and eating pizza doesn't really seem consistent with my new weight loss programme and I was just feeling generally morose. Over three months in Korat, lack of weight loss and just life in general has started to get to me.

But the problem is... the Friday night Leo binge while complaining about Korat is my only real social life here and I am loathe to give it up. Furthermore, my daughter loves to play with my mate's son, and with school closed down they need the play time together.

I'm also getting a little tired of losing my Saturdays... it doesn't matter how late I go to bed, I still wake up around 5am and three to four hours of broken sleep just isn't enough. I seem to have lost the ability to go back to sleep once I wake up so I spend Saturdays tired and grumpy.

But anyway, despite not being 'into' it last night I did what was expected of me. Ants also got into the pizza so I bagged it up and took it home for the chickens. Sorry Nid.

When we arrived home I hunted for the the ingredients. I decided to start with the Breville 'Baked beans, fennel sausage and gruyere' toasted sandwich.

A lot of the minor ingredients seemed superfluous to me and it was too late to start defrosting sausages. I swapped out the gruyere cheese for some Makro Aro cheddar but the beans I had. I've never used or even heard of 'Watties' baked beans before but Korat has become a baked bean desert and I haven't seen my usual Brook beans for months. These Watties beans seem to come from NZ of all places but they seemed to do the job. I also decided to test out Toppers method of spreading mayo instead of butter... I used butter on the bottom slice and mayo on the top to see what the difference is.

The Aro bread was still a little disappointing in the size department.

And then we were all set. The mayo spread bread went on the top... I closed the lid and waited for the light to go green.

    And voila!

My first Breville toasties and very little spillage.

    And plated.

I remember turning over one toastie on each plate to demonstrate the difference between the mayo and and butter spread, but can't for the life of me remember which was which. I don't see any noticeable difference so maybe I have debunked that myth.

And there we have it... the Breville baked bean, gruyere and fennel sausage toastie!

    Drunk food made easy.

    ^^

More than edible, especially after six large Leos.
