A good sharpening steel is the best sharpening tool there is ... a good knife doesn't need a lot of sharpening for most household use, a touch up here and there with the steel is generally more than enough for most households, I'm guessing.
I just use a carborundum block. We order these for industrial use for in-situ machine tool sharpening, but seems to work great for kitchen / general purpose knives and blades.
