    Turkey Leftovers.

I was in Makro the other day and they had 3kg frozen turkeys on sale for 170bht each. Now, I'm not a huge fan of turkey but at that price I think I'll get me one and roast it. Problem is, what to do with all the leftovers.
Any suggestions? (Keep them clean 555)

You don't care for turkey but will purchase an over abundant amount because can't pass on the price special?

The everlasting left over turkey question.

As a kid, every year we would have a great big turkey, and for the next week would have the left over turkey meals. Curried, risotto, fried rice, pasta, you name it. They ALL tasted like crap.

The only exception was the very last use, when most of the meat was off, the bones and carcass would be used to make soup. Pretty OK.

Now, when we get a turkey, we have fresh roast on the first day, the rest is either served cold sliced (with chips, in a sandwich etc) - or tossed.

Even if you got two meals off it, for 170 baht, cant go wrong.

    ..and fuck off Jeff.

I can pass on it, and I did. But after getting home and thinking about it I reckon I could get a few meals out of it to keep in the freezer.
Some of us live on a budget, and if that means I have to buy something on offer, that might not be my No1 choice, then so be it. I don't think anyone can say that turkey is their favourite meat, but still, every year millions are eaten.
nidhogg, thanks for your suggestions, I wonder if there is some kind of marinade that would help liven up this dull tasting meat.

    Oh! and Jeff..........What he said^

How about a pie? Some cubed ham with the turkey meat. Maybe some carrots, peas and onion. A simple white sauce and a pastry top. Can all be frozen (before cooking for the pastry to brown) and whipped out at your convenience

Cajun style spice is fantastic with turkey, but don't think it would work with cooked leftovers

Even with only 2 or 3 pax I wouldn't have leftovers from a 3kg bird.
Not like the west were they sell 20kg plus birds.

Soup and dumplings with the left overs.

Might even freeze some. Give it to any guests that might arrive over Sonkran...

I think pies are going to be the way to go. As for the dogs? I'm sure they'll be getting some.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

Prolly the Butterball Brand. Good if you like butter. Norbest brand if you don't.

Leftover turkey is the best. Any number of turkey sandwiches. Make them first then use the carcass to make a big pot of turkey noodle veggie soup.

    Your basic turkey sandwich.

    A hot turkey sandwich.

Last but not least the soup.

Butterball brand turkeys don't contain any butter - it's just a name. Could have just as easily been called Lardass turkeys.

For the last maybe half dozen years I get a turkey (pre-cooked) for Xmas. We have the missuses family round for a turkey Xmas dinner. First year they looked at it highly suspiciously - now they can have the damn thing down to carcass in a very short time.

^^I stand correct. They are injected with a basting liquid consisting of salt water and "basting spices". In any case either is fine with me but given a choice I'd get Norbest. As you know, up here you take what you can get.

As far as I know both are imported. None are from Thailand. Oddly enough Laotians raise and eat a fair amount of turkey.

    Well bugger me sideways.

    Learn something new.

What is it in them then that oozes out during cooking, and smells like butter?

Edit - just read the above post.

^They are brined. Brining is a good thing. Particularly good for pork chops.

Well, just got back from Makro. Checked the price on the freezer, Unit Price Butterball 170bht Norbest 155bht. Thought I'd check at the meat counter and they said price was per kilo. Went back and checked the freezer again and that still said unit price. Suggested they had labelled it incorrectly and was given a grin and a chuckle in return.......Oh well, that's that then, feck the turkey.
