    Oven Anyone?

During the recent floods, I lost my beloved built in electric oven. So, Mrs JYY and me set off for Homepro to buy a new one. Amongst all the unknown (To me) brands, priced at 15-30,000 baht, there was a Zannusi. It's reduced from 13,000 baht to 7,995 baht. Salesman steps in, with a sly grin on his face, "You don't want this one sir, It doesn't have a fan, you really should buy this more expensive model". I opened the door and took a look inside. OOH look!!, a fan.
Just cooked my first batch of muffins and cookies with it, and they turned out great.
So, if you're looking for a built in fan oven, get down to Homepro. I don't know how long the sale is on.
Do not walk beside me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me for I may not follow. Just pretty much leave me the fuck alone!

I had the same thing when I was buying a vacuum cleaner a few years ago.

"You don't want that one, it's rubbish and overheats all the time".

    "What bollocks", I thought.

Sure enough, it overheats after about 5 minutes of use. I'll let the Midget choose the new one.

We had a Zanussi oven in the last flat that we were in in Dubai. I loved it. Go for it.

Eyeties know how to make ovens. Just dont buy one of their toasters. I bought a slick looking DeLonghi 20 odd years ago, art deco looking thing. Most useless piece of kitchen stuff I ever bought. Been getting shit about it ever since.
Stick to what they know, like ovens.

The Eyeties can also make a good washing machine. I had one back in the UK. It lasted for years, and was never a problem.

My midget is 170cm... but its always best to let her choose these type of things.
If she chooses the wrong one then it matters nought.

My midget is competely clueless when it comes to ovens. She thinks it's just another kitchen cupboard, with knobs and a glass door. A single gas ring is about her limit.
    I do love her though.

Techno Gas has been good for us for both stove top cooking as well as baking. I think it is an Italian brand. Mr.s Chi made some tasty brownies from scratch yesterday. Quite nice with a scoop of 'nilla ice cream on top!!

My cinnamon and raisin muffins turned out well today, as did my butter shortbread.

You should try searching for the model on yourself or at least visit there websites. Or read peoples reviews on it. Instead of listening a sales guy who always wants to trap you.

That's just it, I didn't listen to him.
I was in Homepro, this oven was in a sale, the sale ended the next day. No time for research, I just went with my gut feeling, but I agree with you on the research and reading reviews thing. It's always a good idea if you have the time.

Is it a stand alone or does it need to be built in???
Looking hard at the moment and tossing up between gas and electric - need to make things like Pizza's Naans etc? Do you think it will do the job?
    Thanks
    Jaapie

I am with Chitown on this. Puchased a stand-alone Gas oven (need electric for the lights) no problems retains its heat well.

pizza can be made in a standalone or built-in home oven, but it isn't quite the same as pizza done right. a 'real' pizza oven's a lot hotter. same for a tandoori oven; and nan is usually made by sticking the dough to the stone sides of the oven. most western-style home ovens aren't really designed for that.

i'll probably be buying a standalone oven soon, as i'm planning on buying some cast iron cookware and will need to season it. i doubt i'll do a lot of baking at home though except for lasagna.

ideally i'd like to have wood-fired outdoor pizza and tandoori ovens, they can be cheap and easy to build, but i doubt my landlord would be thrilled if i built one on the balcony of my apartment.
