Sukhumi, also spelled as Sukhum (Abkhaz: Аҟəа, Aqwa; Georgian: სოხუმი, Sokhumi, Russian: Сухуми/Сухум) is the capital of Abkhazia, a de facto independent republic, which is internationally recognized as being an autonomous republic within Georgia, except by Russia and Nicaragua, which regard it as an independent state. The city suffered heavily during the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict in the early 1990s.
