If you get 1,2 or even 3 on first stab it is a great help. If nothing it can be almost impossible hard to do better than 5 or 6.
With 3 or more my crossword skill memory help a little but Borax was a bastrad

I use "raise" quite often to start and if nothing shows up I go with "shout" or "cloud" to follow.
However I go random probably 50% of the time. Willy likes to call it magic but getting a good start is exactly as you stated "more luck than judgement".
