Guessing Game: What is this called and what is it used for?

Not that familiar with all drilling hardware, but maybe some kind of flow/pressure equalizer?

^^ Flow is a part of it.

^ I you look again you will see that’s not actually bypassing anything. The line that runs horizontally below it is the bypass line when you don't want to flow through this piece of equipment. For example, when they are drilling out cement.
