Shell scam

Wasn't sure in which section to post this so mods pls move it if you feel it should be somewhere else.

Presuming I'm not the only one that the staff at the Shell gas station on Pattaya Tai try to rip off I thought a warning might be in order.

Either they try to get away with not resetting the meter from the previous customer (usually positioning themselves between me and the meter) or they give incorrect change (never gotten to much...).

Everybody can have a bad day but this has been happening regularly during the two years I've been using that station. Doesn't most of the other, non Shell, gas stations have cashiers to try to minimize the risk of this kind of things?

It's an old scam, got caught once at a Shell station in Chiangmai. Check the pump is zero ever since.

Why do you keep going back to the same place that ripped you off ?

You're right, should be boycotting them but unfortunately I'm lazy and they're closest both to where I live and where I work.

This station is well known for scamming and also the people there can be very nasty when confronted. But why for 2 years have you been getting scammed when you know it is happening. Use another station.

Has anyone bothered telling Shell about this?

It's a scam I look out for everywhere in Thailand, but it's never yet been tried on me- probably because I make an obvious point of looking at the meter before the pump commences.

The MP garage on Thepprasit Road is the best one, the led meter is so dim you actually need to be within a a couple of foot of them to read them, I should think by now those petrol attendents are driving better cars than me

As mentioned, this gas station is notorious and has been the source of more posts than it's worth on 'that other forum'. In fact, the OP has already posted this latest report there with the same excuse that he is too lazy to find an alternative gas station and been sent packing with the same incredulous responses.

So anything that's been discussed on another forum shouldn't be discussed here and the fact that I'm lazy means I shouldn't warn others about a place that regularly try to rip off it's customers?

Well it's a scam i've not thought to look out for so i'm gratefull of the the warning as are lots of other viewers of this thread i'm sure.

Don't go there! If enough people stop using them they will go out of business. If everyone keeps using them because they are "too lazy" to go anywhere else, they'll never get the message, will they???

years its been going on there, funniest thing i saw there about 5yrs ago a european bike said nothing at all just got off his bike knocked the petrol attendant spark out with 1 punch! got back on his bike in no hurry at all & rode off,
all the other cheats ( pump attendants ) just stood there & did nothing very unusual for thais,

In other words it's probably happened once. Similar happened me me on ran inthra, but with esso. I didn't give them a second chance.

Happened once when myself and the missus were on holiday and rented out two small scooter. Filled hers, she paid, then mine. They didn't reset the pump, knowing what was going on I got out the manual as the seat was up and opened it to the page where it shows the fuel capacity.

Upon finishing and them stating the amount I laughed, told them what had happened (mentioning that they must have made a mistake), they said 'no', I showed them the manual and asked how they manged to put twice the maximum amount of fuel into the tank. I told them I'm giving them amount for full tank which was half what was on the meter, or perhaps we should get a journalist and police over to record their physics-defying feat.

Laughing about it and reiterating that it was obviously a mistake and that it's hard to see the numbers in the sun probably saved me from being foot-stomped by every employee there.

Wonder how much these jobs go for anyway, the management probably sell them to the highest bidder.

The half-way/ tollway village on the Bangkok-Chon Buri Motorway is notorious for the exact same scam at the petrol pumps.

Always get out of your car and check the metre before giving the attendant the order to start filling your car.

Thank You for that advice,was unaware that scam goes on in urban areas.
My big laugh is in my wifes rural village. Every time I borrow a vehicle ,be it car,truck,motorbike the fuel needle is always on E. Yes I laugh E for enough.Returning said vehicle my wife insists on at least a half a tank of fuel along with tip. Starting to think the villagers maybe approaching her the night before,"you can borrow my truck in the morning".

I used to borrow with the same scenario , then I thought fuckin hell I'll buy my own
no w sits a million Bharts worth of pickup in my garage that I rarely use but my neighbours n friends won't earn from me a little diesel..

I had a good one; I pulled into a petrol station near Nan and asked them to fill up

my tank was about half empty but there are not so many stations in the hills

they filled me up, the cost was very high for half a tank. When I checked they had actually filled with more than the tank could hold empty!!

so my wife had a word with the manager, mentioned the police and the problem was solved by her paying about the right amount for half a tankful

they said they must have "forgotten" to reset the pump

The solution to this is really really easy.

Get off the bike, lift the seat and place your hand on the filler cap, then simply look at the meter and don't remove the cap till you see the meter has zero on it.

If the attendant tries to stand in the way just sign with your other hand that you want him to move.
