Jomtien Bakers Oven - Pies and stuff

Ok things are moving forward at a rush which is quite unusual in Pattaya, really should put a stop to that sort of thing, but the Jomtien pie shop is on, lease is signed, sign people contacted and ready and waiting, plus loads of other stuff, so time to see what it is like opening a business in Thailand, okay, he has it pretty hard as there are loads of pie and sausage people here already, most are really good as the meat quality here is so high, ie they aint scraping the meat off of dead animals heads and that, but I got to help him, I much prefer rich friends who pay for everything than poor friends where I pay and we go to the crappy places I go to.

Now we got to remember his landlord is reaming him up the butthole on rent here, but fok you got to have a business premise if you want to do business, he has some real strong competitors, ie Yorkies down the far end of Jomtien which does real good stuff, Big Johns or Big Joes whichever it is, plus a load of others in Pattaya so its gonna be an uphill struggle for him, anyway we shall follow his life for a month.

Here we have a little map of where the place is.

    Here's his place.

Yeah it needs some work before he opens.

How much floor space does he have there, looks pretty small?

    Wish him well though!

Will he do cooking/baking on the premises? As Jizzy said, it does look a little small for that.

All the best to him, though.

Fok me. Is this the place he got down to 18,000bt?
Hes got his work cut out there to make nearly £300 just to pay the rent. Good luck to him and everything but thats being reamed up the brown one prison style.

Is this related to the Bakers Oven in Soi Nernplubwan DD, or a different biz?

I'd guess that units about 3 to 4m wide max and not much bigger in depth. With the upstairs as well a rough guess of about 16sqm down and about 14sqm upstairs. I might be being a bit generous at that.

Dog, Does this guy know how to make proper pies like one gets in Australia / NZ ? Yorkies are edible but only just and Big Johns, not to my refined taste and I have eaten more pies than you have had hot breakfasts, so I know what I am talking about.
If someone set up a proper pie line here and then had half decent distribution with Pie warmers in bars they would go well.
All the pies I have had here seem to be baked on domestic ovens or those crap Thai ovens and they are raw on the bottom pastry.

The Bakers oven in Soi Nern Plub Wan will be supplying his pies, these are supposedly the best in Pattaya now, I don't know as I have never tried them as that is a real poxy road to drive down and get to from Jomtien.

He is also an extremely good cook and will be making his own stuff so that will help his profit margin a bit, and yes, the rents are shocking down here, my rent is going to be increased to 8,000baht per month for the next 3 years his is the cheapest rent I know of in the area, all my neighbours pay 20k baht and upwards per month

The ground floor is about 3.8 meters by 8 meters with an extended back room of about 3.8 by 2.5 meters so that will be the kitchen area, the place is already tiled and the bathrooms are clean and useable so he has saved a bit on that although that is only really a minor expense when you consider what the rent is each and every month.

Checked the price of air cons today, mitsubishi 18,000btu are 37,900baht, so I think a LG will be fitted at 27,900baht

The sign is being made up now and is the whole width of the building front, so hopefully people will be able to find it

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. If hes a good cook then he's got a bit of a head start, thing is he's got to be better than whats around to keep the first flash of "try buyers" coming back.
Do you know what he's offering thats different or going to grab punters attention?

Thinking about the upstairs,,,,, now it's real hard to get people to go upstairs be it a bar or restaurant, but restaurants are on good profit margins and he does need stuff to actually make a living, so he is thinking of a restaurant in the future once he has a reasonable customer base, but, he could furnish it as an apartment and get say 9k baht per month for long termers, that would be a real good deal for someone, it's 300 meters from the beach.

Taking a wild guesstimate his break even figure will be around 130,000k baht, thats without him getting any dosh and paying 1 staff, so to make it worthwhile even getting out of bed in the morning he has to look at turning over 250k baht real quick per month with a steady increase from that figure, the bakers oven in Soi Nern Plub Waan will be supplying him with other stuff, ie bacon, sausages, think they even do that black pudding, so thats a start to a reasonable product range, but, no where near is it enough.....

^^^piece of piss to get to the bakers oven on nern plub waan from Jomtien, go up Thepasit, cross straight over into Khao Talo, take the new road on the left 'before' the railway line, follow that all the way to nern plub waan, turn right go about 100 meters and on your right you will see a green sign saying 'Phuriburi' resort, turn right there and the 'bakers oven' is about 20 meters up that road on your right. Excellent bread and pies etc.

He is a really good cook and he enjoys it which is the most important thing, he has run a few restaurants in Pattaya for short periods so would have a small following I think for his initial start up, but he does need a real big following to cover that rent and those electric bills.

The trouble with Pattaya and Jomtien is that there are already many bakers and euro butchers that supply better quality and more variation than places where I lived in London, my local super market in Jomtien has about 40 different breads, German, French and God knows what else, I think in the UK it was just Mothers Pride wasn't it

He defineately does need unique foods that only he has to get the customers to go there just because it is the only place that has it, it's about 2 weeks before he opens so lets see how it goes

I have a sports car, I don't drive it on dirt tracks well unless I am picking my son up and he wants to see what rally driving is like, they had this great big field next to his old school, used to go on there and let him use the handbreak, get it up to about 80km, start turning and let him whack on the hand brake, glad my girlfriend never found out about that

^it ain't a dirt track if you take the road before the railway line, probably the best road in Pattaya, the one the other side of the railway is another matter though.

Probably wouldn't hurt your mate if you told him to spam the pattaya boards as most of them have a business section where you can promote your gaff for free, won't cost him nowt and gets him some free publicity.

He's dipping his toe into a tough market but then I dont suppose theres many easy ones.
If he's selling other peoples stuff to start why should I buy them from him and not the guy whos making them? Thats what goes through my head with supply from someone else.
He's either got to offer something different to whats around, undercut them with a similar quality product, go for the top end luxury market with something special or produce his own branded stuff. Not an easy call.
I'd guess most of the restaurants are settled with suppliers for bangers and bacon etc.

2nd floor should be a coffee snack place a proper restaurant is a hard work but a place doing decent coffee, filled rolls, sausage rolls, tortilla wraps even scones and some of yer other pommy snack food would do well.
Its dead easy food to put together and with good coffee / Tea, would pull some punters I reckon.

Lard. Sell proper lard. Seems there's a shortage in the country.

Good Polish or kosher dill pickles would sell well I believe. Fresh Homemade Salsas, not the canned junk. How about some Clotted Cream?

huh, 99.99999 percent of people drink coke a cola, foked if i know where there factory is but yes he does need unique content for people to actually bother talking about his place, and most importantly to get a resonable profit margin.
