I've not been to Samet for over 10 years, so what's the best way down there these days?
Bus to Rayong? Minivan to the pier? How much is a joe?

I have not done it by bus for 30 years but there still must be a bus direct to Ban Phe and that is what you want. Starts at Ekkamai.
says they run every 1 1/2 hours from Ekamai
How to Get to Ban Phe pier ( for boats to Koh Samet ) ? UPDATED November 25, 2022
get in a minivan - live a little........
I travelled in one once back from Koh Chang to BKK and on top of it being cramped it was without doubt one of the two most scary bus trips of my life. I'm convinced the driver was on yabba, he had weird nervous tics and he spent the entire journey going full Audi up behind the traffic, slewing the van out to overtake, cutting up when pulling back in and smoking his tyres when braking. I lost it and shouted at him to pull over and drop us off still with about 60 kms to BKK - never repeated that mistake since, i'd rather walk.
It's best to avoid weekends on Samet these days.
I'd hire a minivan if there's more than two of you. Then you can spread out and have a few drinks.
I used quite a few to get around parts of Isan. Very cramped for a six footer, in fact a couple of seats are physically impossible. Any spare room is taken up by bags of questionable and smelly things, plus of course chickens. Lots of single-carriageway roads at that time so it was dive out, race to overtake, dive in again. Plenty of heavy right foot action; start, stop, repeat. Getting off the van was always the best part.
All past tense. I haven't been in an Isan van for 3 or 4 years and it would be a peculiar alignment of the planets that saw me get in one again.
Man. Had to laugh. Have many van ride memories. Great fun. I uses to call them Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Great fun with 3 or 4 friends. That airborne feeling is great. It's like zero G for a flash. You can enjoy the same experience on a train ride here.
A few local farangs I know go to Koh Samet regularly and apparently enjoy doing so.
The place has never interested me nor has Koh Larn although I could be on the island within an hour from my home.
Maybe because the beaches there generally have no waves.
I guess I was spoiled growing up in Australia.
