The two together (mum and daughter).
Apart, i thought they were similar size, but this is the first time they have both had their heads out at the same time, and they obviously aren't.

Yesterday (27/1/11) was the maiden flight of the chick.
She waited in the nest for food, and after the first beakfull, flopped out of the nest and followed mum.
Lots of noise, and the adults and chick spent all day flying around.
No trial and error, the young un got it spot on from the off.
Just before dusk, only one bird came back to the nest to spend the night alone.
In the morning light this morning, i could see it was the chick.
The 2 parents arrived early this morning (06:35), and sat on the telephone wires chirrping a lot, untill the little un once again left the nest.

My work here is done, hopefully until next year.

Shame and scandal in the family.

In the weeks following the birth earlier this year, the newborn chick spent a lot of time with her father, and the mother eventually flew away never to be seen again.
Less than a month after her birth she built a really small and frankly very crap little nest, and then laid an egg which never hatched.

Last month, father and daughter ripped apart the old nest at the front of the house and started a new one right outside the back door using thr recycled dry material.
Sticky tape was again employed to keep the ants at bay, and a windbreak/rain shelter was erected by the missus to offer protection from the elements.

A single egg was duly laid, and father and daughter are now the proud parents of a new daughter.
That should keep the neighbours gossiping.

Dad "on the nest" (cough) feeding his daughter.

    Mum doing the same.

So, once again 'till next year.

    What a lovely little thread.

I look forward to poping down and visting the Stoker family before too long, and I know that Money and Lucky are very much looking forward to the trip too.

Good to see that the ants were dealt with, the little bastards.

great thread..one of the first things i noticed here in the shithole was the distinct absence of birdlife..a coastal city, no gulls no terns shags..nothing, the only birdlife is a few feral pigeons and sparrows..oh and bloody chooks of course, i reckon these monkey bastards ate all the eggs and have essentially wiped out the bird population..sad really, i miss hearing the birdsong..now all i get is these ferkin roosters cockafuckingdoodleing all bloody hours

The comings and goings of these little birds is really quite entertaining and a very relaxing start to my mornings for a big part of the last couple of years.
Wish i had invested in a decent camera, and i wish i had some footage of myself trying to take those last photos - hanging out of a window balancing on a chair and a cooker.

^ You can be so so cruel sometimes.

The bloke next door keeps various birds that he catches in cages. He showed a real interest in the nest. Missus says he thinks i'm a bit daft as i didn't want to cage the birds.
He's Thai, so he must be right.

    Time for an update.

Since i started this thread, the same family of birds have been nesting around the house, and have produced ten sets of chicks including three sets of twins.

They always seem very busy around christmas time, and this year has been no different.
Early December saw the arrival of another set of twins, an event heralded by the fact that when these birds have 2 chicks, both parents spend all day returning to the nest to feed them, as opposed to just the mum when they have only one mouth to feed.

I watched again the maiden flight of these two birds on December 17th, and saw them come back to the nest later that day, but they couldn't figure out how to get back in the nest so they slept on an adjacent clothes line.

Here's the proud mum sitting on the chicks before they flew off.

    The "fat twins".

    Mum and daughters.
No room for dad - the males never stay in the nest.

The two fat twins keeping warm.

    So, the cycle continues.
Mum has turfed out the two fat twins and repaired her nest.
This morning she laid another egg.

Time for me to go and get the sticky tape again.

Wrapped around the line that the nest is attached to - it stops the ants from eating the chicks - do keep up.

The male leaving the mother in the nest. Sounds like the Thai of the male persuasion, innit?

To be fair to the male birds, they help with feeding, in between posturing and preening in the mirror.

last time I was in LOS we were chopping one of the trees down on the wife's land and I was attacked by ants. I'm 6'-2" but still in no rush to repeat that experience, so god knows what its like for a "wee" bird.

    excellent read, thanks for sharing...
