Unfortunately not. The amount of ants in/on the nest would have stripped a living elephant by now. Reckon it was ants that the parents were trying to get out of the nest this morning.

Liberal amounts of double sided sticky tape have been applied at the top of the nest. If that fails, i may resort to machine-gunning the little bastards.

Did the ants come because the chick was dead, or did the chick die because the ants came?

^ Honestly don't know. I've seen the bastards carry off a stag beetle that was still alive. Merciless.

The birds have quite an ally in you, I wonder if they'll figure that out. Make sure you teach those ants a lesson.

Protect the birds at all cost. . .well, almost all cost.

The egg hatched about a fortnight ago, so my early morning brew has been accompanied by the busy little bird feeding her offspring. She leaves the nest around 7 AM, and her first delivery is about ten minutes later. The chick sticks it head out of the nest, opens its beak, and nigh on puts mums head into its mouth.

Feeding over in a few seconds, mum flies off to get some more food.
In the two weeks since hatching, the chick is now on solid food, and has started to find its voice. It stays out of sight deep in the nest, appearing only to eat its mums head.

... so what took you so long to get these pics up - and good ones they are too.

Now, the ant bastard army, what have you done about them? Any problems thusfar? Remember, if they get through your defences they can kill that lovely little blighter in minutes!

Breathing in their direction generally does the job. The lau kau fumes cause instant death.

^ The ants soon grow immune to new dangers though; very resourceful little buggers.

The sticky tape seems to have done the trick.
When the female flew off yesterday, i added more tape around the top of the nest where it is attached to a coathanger. Whilst i was balanced on top of my bike seat, the 2 birds turned up, and the male puffed out his chest and started making a right racket.
I do believe the hard bastard was offering to fight me, so i legged it, pronto.

Good to see you're on the case; don't risk too much though - I can see an image where the tiny bird flusters you just enough to fall off that bike seat and bang your knee (or worse).

It's a dangerous job, but you're saving lives here.

    Next time.

Couple more from last few days. The chick is as big as mum, and nearly as loud.

Here are a couple more taken earlier today.
The last 2 days has seen the mum spending less time at the nest feeding, and more time sitting nearby making a noise.
The male has started to put in the odd appearance, not at the nest, but nearby, also singing a lot.
I think young un may be ready to flee the nest soon..
They don't half grow up quick nowadays.

These 2 shots are of the young un.
She ( assuming a she due to no blue chest) has orange either side of her beak.
