Actually, untill i read the post from gypsy, i thought it was all over. After the "fight" yesterday morning, i only saw the female a couple of times, and she made no adjustments to the nest, but maybe all is not lost -

Hope that's the case with these two, as i haven't seen them at all today, although i heard them singing this morning somewhere near.

The birds have not shown up at all for the last couple of days, and then about an hour ago, the female came back, flew straight past the nest, through the open front door, couple of laps around the living room, and into the bedroom. Got a couple of snaps of her before she departed, straight past the nest again.

    Food
feeds mainly on nectar. Also eats spiders, insects and larvae.

    Breeding
Both male and the female assist in building a long spindle shaped nest with side entrance, and slight overhanging porch at the entrance. The nest is made of bark fibre, grass and leaves bound with spider web, with a trail of hanging material at the bottom end. The female lays two or three grey-green mottled eggs.

They should help keep the bugs down in the area, always a plus.

Having seemingly abandoned the nest for over a week, the last two days has been quite busy for the little birds. The nest itself has shrunk a bit as the fresh moss and foliage used in its construction has dried out, and it looks much sturdier now. Maybe this is why they leave the nest for a week or so.

Still haven't managed to get any shots of the male. He usually sits across the road, only occasionally dropping in to cuss a lot. Here's the female enlarging the "porch".

Here is a rather unflattering shot of her bottom.

    Enlarged from above photo.

Bringing home some fresh nesting material.

    Again, cropped down a bit.

So, no eggs yet, and unfortunately i'll be away for a couple of weeks.

The state of the nest at close of play today.

Got my own 'new member of the family' this afternoon. This little one dropped right in front of me, not able to return to its nest, so the parents were feeding it on the ground. Knowing there's a few nasty semi-feral cats around, I just put it back into the nest in the palm tree. Hope it stays there a few more days; soon it will be able to fly properly...

Well. Arrived back in the early hours of this morning, and took a look outside when i woke up. The lady was sitting inside the nest, with her head sticking out. She's been there all day, apart from the flash spooking her when i took a photo, so i've had to desist from any more, which is a pity, as she returned to the nest with the male, and they sat together on the same branch of a bush in the garden - great photo that would have been. I reckon she's sitting on eggs though.

    Have you considered this?

It just struck me that this would be an ideal opportunity to make Birds Nest Soup. Just by chance I happen to have an excellent recipe to hand:

    BIRD'S NEST SOUP

    Recipe By :
    Serving Size : 6 Preparation Time :0:00
    Categories : Chinese Soups/stews

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
    --
    3 1/2 oz (approx) dried bird's nest
6 c Rich chicken stock for soup
    1 lg Chicken breast
    2 tb Cornstarch
2 tb Rich chicken stock for paste
    1 tb Dry sherry
    1/4 c Rich chicken stock
    2 Egg whites
    1 t Salt
    2 Green onions, minced
    1 tb Minced Smithfield ham

Preparation: Soak bird's nest in cold water
overnight. Drain and rinse. Spread softened nest
pieces on plate; pick out prominent pieces of
“foreign” matter (e.g. feathers, twigs) with tweezers.
Debone chicken breast, remove membrane and muscle
fiber, pound meat with cleaver handle to break down
tissue, mince chicken until it is pulp. Make medium
thick paste with cornstarch and chicken stock.

Cooking: Bring rich chicken stock for soup to boil.
Immediately add bird's nest; simmer 30 minutes. Mix
dry sherry and remaining stock; dribble slowly into
    minced chicken. Lightly beat egg whites with a fork;
fold gently into chicken so they are not completely
blended. Add salt to soup. Bring soup back to boil and
add chicken mixture slowly so soup does not cool. When
soup returns to boil, it is ready to serve. You can
hold it at this point on low heat. Pour into serving
bowl, garnish with green onions and ham.

Should make a great starter and you can use the egg whites the female is sitting on!

The birds nest soup may happen in a couple of weeks.

It's been over a month since the birds started building their nest, and this last week has been fairly uneventfull with the female spending all day and night in the nest, and the male checking out his plummage in the bike mirror for ten minutes in the morning. All that changed today.
Firstly, i managed to get the male in a photo.

    Compared to the female:-

Then i got a few piccies of them together as they busied themselves around the nest all morning.

    Some more of the pair.

The reason for the intense activity today was soon revealed. The thread should be re-titled as Three new lodgers. When the dad was checking on his offspring, i saw a tiny little head appear in the nest hole. Bearing in mind that the adults aren't much bigger than my thumb, the newborn are very small. No photo yet.
I'm off for a beer to wet the babies head.

Give it a week or two and they'll be off to pastures new..I'd tap them up for the rent asap if I were you, and ask them if they're gonna take the fucking home with them..unless you wanna boil it up as MH suggested..

Hats off to the cameraman though..fine effort that man..

I'd green you, but I can't be fucked.

    It's the thought that counts.

The last photo of the female at the top of the nest was her adding more cobwebs to enable more weight. When the two adults left the nest, the whole contraption was moving. Reckon the little uns inside were trying to fly.

Are mater and pater starting to tame of you or is the stench of Lau Kau still repelling them..
Serious question...they should be getting used to your presence now?

    OH DEAR!

This morning my lay in was disturbed by a rather excited missus waking me up to witness "the birds family have come to look at the baby". Sure enough, there were two pairs of sunbirds chattering away in the bush just below the nest. After a minute or so, one couple left, leaving the residents be. The parents of little un then set about the nest feverishly, pecking away like mad and seemingly achieving nothing. They then kept flying to the hole, and eventually the male started tugging on something so violently that the nest started swinging. When they left, i went outside to look.

Can you see the reddidsh head (looks a bit like Donald Duck) to the left of center of the photo?
Unfortunately, that is the dead chicks head hanging out of the nest.

The male has been returning frequently and trying to remove the chick, so far without success.
So, regretfully, the last two shots are of the head and spine protruding from the nest, stripped almost bare by the tiny ants that have covered the nest. What a short life.
