    Asian Water Monitor

Today I had a chance to see more clearly an asian water monitor "Varanus salvator", over 1 m long. Even if just for a few seconds before he was chased under muddy water by my dog not minding my protests.

Over few past years I have known about him in the nearby river, however getting always just a glims of him when walking along the river.

Unfortunately could not snap a picture, so herewith a googled picture:

We have a Klong and get regular visits but my dog Bruno loves to play with them.

The last one who had a session with my dog, almost 2 metres long, is no longer with us.

There's a stream that runs 5 yards past our place and these boys glide in quite regularly looking for the eggs that the wading birds lay.

    They're pretty cool.

They're hard to miss in Puttamonton Park up in Talingchan.

A great park all round and well worth a visit.

Can't say. I had gaeng pet hia once. As usual the "pet" part of the gaeng was overpowering so I had no sense of what the meat was. Then I took a forkfull of what must have been the skin. Tough and gristley. I was then told what the meat was and although I eat almost anything, I got very squeamish because down south here, with so many Muslims, dead bodies are buried not cremated and the water monitors are known grave robbers. I did not continue eating.

The guy who is living here in the river is not keen on any socializing - and not used to it - so he hardly can be spotted, very sensitive on the rare encounters around.
