    Dog's training

When you get a new dog, do you train it or you just feed it and hope it's going to grow up ok ?

If you decide to train it, do you do it yourself or do you use the help of a professional ? What kind of result do you expect ?

Not talking about training but just correcting bad habits like taking a leak in the middle of the living room, how do you do it ? Any tip you're willing to share ?

I'm assuming it's a pup. Scold it immediately, and best if you do so as it's peeing. If you miss it, leave it till the dog pees/dumps again in the wrong place otherwise it won't know why it's being scolded. Never need to raise your hand, tone should be its guidance.

There are also sprays they don't like, so when you scold it also spray on the wet/dirty spot.

Take it outside when you think it's due for a pee/dump, and encourage it to go with whatever words you choose (be busy, etc), and when it does then show it you're happy and praise it. Dogs thrive on praise.

Toilet training is the worst bit.
Control their access to food and water and just after they have eaten walk them.
Puppies will shit almost straight away after eating, praise them when they do it somewhere acceptable.

Other stuff like sit, stand fetch etc is all about keying natural behaviour. Best to use a hand signal as well as a word.
For sit hold a treat in you fist, let the dog see and smell it then raise your fist while telling him to sit. As he looks up and reaches his neck travel point he will naturally sit so as to keep looking at your hand. When he does give him the treat and an attaboy....eventually stop using the treat and just praise, then just showing a closed fist should be enough to make him sit. If you get them when they are attentive, but not excited it can take in only minutes.
Everything else is variations on the theme.

Train myself and reward good behavior.

Girlfriend posted a picture of him on her facebook page.

He received a few stitches (in three different places) a couple days ago and needed a special collar so he doesn’t pull them out. He’ll be 13 in April.

Read Caesar Milans books about rearing puppies or any of his books. We have 6 dogs it was 7 until a snake bit one a couple of days ago. You can not feed and hope good behaviour is taught and nurtured. It takes time and patience but is worth it.

He is good, loved watching his TV show when we were in the UK. So much knowledge and good advice. Following his tips when we feed our dogs they all sit still and wait for the food to be placed in front of them. The older ones wont start eating until we tell them to. There has to be rules when feeding especially how many we have, otherwise it would be bedlam.
