    Cobra invasion !

Last year at this time, we spotted the first cobra in our garden and
for the 2 month following I killed a cobra weekly, some weeks twice.
I don't lie when I say I have must killed more than 10 of them in competition with our dogs who prolly took another 5.

They totally disappeared around Songkran and I wrote it off as an effect of the heavy flooding we had that year. I thought that brought the snakes down from the mountains not far away from here.

So 5 days ago it was time again. I heard the dogs bark and it was not the normal barking telling that there was people or another dog near the gate.
No, it was the snake-barking, a very loud and deep voiced bark.
I went out on the balcony to see our dogs attacking something in the bushes near the house. When I got down and out, I found this youngster cobra on the driveway:

I whacked him lightly over the head to see if he wanted to play, but no game. He had already lost blood from the dogs bite so I helped him on his way to greener pastures.

Today there was another one right outside of our kitchen stair and this time
it was a bit bigger, about a meter long :

To the right is Nickie, really pissed that he is not allowed to play
    anymore.

Nickie, wont give up even though I already have killed it:

The other 2 team members, Nong:

    and Sprite:

Sprite is extremely quick and jumps like a rabbit. She use to
go for the head of the snakes while the other two attacks the body or tail at the same time

None of them has got bitten sofar which I find very surprising.

Have had the same problem in the past. Albeit it was only one snake.

Here are some links that might help.

Thanks hillbilly, I have 2 good hospitals within 1km range and they have serum for the monocellate cobra.
The vet station is even closer and I will pop in there tomorrow and ask for advice should one of the dogs get bitten.

I'd rather see that I didn't get the cobra's here in the first place though.
And I'm more worried about the dogs than about myself. The cobra can not reach out very far when attacking so it is not difficult to stab them in the head with a long pole. The dogs however do not keep distance, actually it is a fight between me and them on who is gonna kill the snake.

Surprising that this should come up now. I didn't realize there was a "season" for Cobra, however, as I posted on another thread last week, one was killed not far from my driveway. A big Flocker at that. The same day the BiL killed one under his truck leanto.

Later on I found out he killed another - actually called me to see if I wanted the meat - a day or two later.

I've never heard of seasonal snakes in the tropics. Hmmmm

Cold/warm weather yes but I've not noticed that much of a change in the last 10 days or so when all this activity has taken place.

If you've never eaten them, they are not bad. Cut into 4"sh pieces and deep fry same as you would chicken. Don't do the blood and bile though like the Chinese that introduced me to Cobra in Chengdu.

If anyone kills any decent size (1 metre) cobras, please save them (or at least the skin) for me and I'll figure out a way to get them from you. I need them with their hood pattern though, so don't want them chopped up. Thanks for any help with this.

This could be complete and utter nonsense - can't even remember where I heard it - but I was told that dogs are immune to snake venom for some reason. Perhaps not immune per se but it's not fatal.

One thing I do know for fact though is that the baby cobras are more deadly than the adults - poor wee things haven't learnt to control their venom yet so when they bite inject the whole lot in one go

Spent the evening hours at BiL's house have a couple of Leos. One of the guys wondered off into the orchard to rid himself of extra Leo. Came back in a flash...

Big Cobra, Thia translated into " 2 meters and as big as my forearm". It went off into the brush post haste. Cobras really don't like being around humans I take it, just stamp your foot and they are gone unless cornered.

It really does seem to be Cobra season here in Chantaburi province.

Lom is correct that I could get rid of the snake for you but it would work out cheaper to just get a local to do it for you. It would cost me more than it's worth for just one snake. Now if it was like that supposed 5 meter one that bit the lady in a pinapple field, I might just make the trip. There has to be at least a few of the locals in your area that can take care of the problem for you.

Do you see the snake on a regular basis, do you see any holes where it might live in or is your house raised off the ground and you can't see where it might be going? Do you have piles of wood, coconut or other natural material that it might be living in? It's best to keep your yard clear of such materials and to keep your yard mowed. As much as people like to have ponds in their yards, it's an attractent to frogs and thus a source of food. Anywhere where there is a food source for frogs, rats or other animals, it's going to attract snakes.

Ask or get your misses to ask around your area for someone to take care of it. I'm sure there's someone around that can take care of it. I haven't gotten any reports of cobras in my area since last year but I'm always looking for the buggers.
