    Carton/boxed wines

Normally we turn up are noses at any wine packaged this way but here because of shipping and storage conditions as well as prices these boxes 3/5 liters are a good choice. The wine is actually in a plastic bag allowing no air or contaminents to enter, slowing materization. There are acouple of S. African brands I prefer, 5 liters about 1000 bt.

Straight out of the box it is.

The secret is to let the stuff breathe for a while.

What I do is pour it back forth in 1.5L water bottles 2-3 times. The difference is dramatic!

Generally the South African wines are pretty good. Certainly on par with Australian and Chilean wines.

The 'wine cask' (or boxed wine) was invented by Thomas Angove (d. 30 March 2010[2]) of Angove's, a winemaker from Renmark, South Australia, and patented by the company on April 20, 1965.

Polyethelene bladders of 1 gallon (4.5 litres) were placed in corrugated boxes for retail sale.

The original design required that the consumer cut the corner off the bladder, pour out the serving of wine and then reseal it with a special peg.[3]

In 1967 Charles Henry Malpas and Penfolds Wines patented a plastic, air-tight tap welded to a metallised bladder, making storage more convenient.

All modern wine casks now utilise some sort of plastic tap, which is exposed by tearing away a perforated panel on the box.

The inventor of the wine cask, South Australian Riverland grape grower Thomas Angove, has died in Renmark, aged 92.

In the bad old days the cardboard boxes were only used for the cheapest, nastiest stuff they could find. These days (in Oz at least) there is an oversupply of quality grapes each season, so the box stuff is usually pretty good.

New technology is always at odds with tradition in the wine business. Soon, the natural cork will be obsolete because the supply is disappearing. Actually, white wines especially can be stored and dispensed in boxes without any effect on the discernable quality of the wine. The consumer usually rejects this kind of packaging because it is at odds with their traditional view of what constitutes good wine.

When I was in Australia last year all wines bar none in the bottle shop were screwtops.

The first 'boxed' wine that was available in N.London in the 60's was the wonderfully named ' Kangarouge' from OZ !

Indeed, much better. no chance of corkage, the wine can be opened and closed, avoids the problem of the worldwide cork shortage.

The wine companies started the process with the most expensive labels first, to avoid a 'cheap' tag/image ala wine boxes....

Marketing , over and over again . Never mind the quality let us talk about the bottle top !!! I like the taste of wines made by families who have done it for generations and whose expertise I CAN TRUST . Wines from OZ , SA , show it at a comparable standard and price . Screw the stupid bottletop !!!!

Many time I fancy a glass of wine at home but I dont want to open a bottle coz only me drinks it, then I end up throwing it away so for me the box wine serves it's purpose.

If have friends round for a BBQ then we have a few bottles
