I normally start with Heineken then finish up on shorts normally JW Black Label.

I'm an Aussie but don't like Aussie beer for some reason, normally gives me a huge headache.

Don't mind San Miguel or Tiger also.

From Tesco to drink at home

    Chang Draught
    Tiger

    In a bar

    Beer Lao
    Tiger

    If free

    San Miguel Light is OK.

NB. There is a theory that Chang draught is Carlsberg.

At home: Leo - cheap and cheerful, but might swap to beerlao for a bit.

Local bar: San Mig light (same strength but less calories - gotta keep the belly at bay!)

Fri/Sat bars: Singha for it's excellent taste.

I've turned into a thai whiskey drinker due to the wifes family enjoying a drop now and again.

I can't stand ice in beer, any bar that needs to put ice in beer because the beer is not cold enough should be shut down.

If you run a bar and sell bottles of beer keep the fridge cold and well stocked, SIMPLES!!

Really? Thai beers are brewed with the addition of ice in mind, hence they taste crap without it. Also, beers tend to warm up quickly here and any lagers taste like shit above freezing point.

So they are brewed with the thought of being watered down to taste better?

If I am drinking lager in a local restaurant I will ask the waiter to chuck a few bottles of their finest beers into the freezer to make them extra cold but putting ice in the beer itself definately a no no for me.

Can you think of any other reason why they are/were too strong and tasted over-hoppy?

They fucked up the recipe but people kept drinking it so they didnt bother changing it?

Now I do like Tiger, but find it a little over priced. Only place locally I can find it is 7/11, about 22 km away.

Got to agree with Marmite, all the local beer tastes a bit better with a lump of ice. San Mig is the best of a bad bunch.

A big Leo over ice seems to the least objectionable I reckon.
Belgian ale has got to be the best. Leffe Blonde is like religious experience after drinking Thai beer.

Hoegaarden: I've got it from Foodland several times, for the poster that asked...

I've got cans of Chang Draft in the fridge (the bottles are probably better).

Tried some Archa Extra the other day, thought it'd be bad like Tennants Extra, but it was actually okay and very cheap.

Tiger is good, usually what I drink when I go out, though Singh or Heineken might do the job on any given day too.

Beer Lao seems to be less good than it was, no different from the Thai beers to me now.

Beer Laos dark was good the first couple of times. Then I tried it against the other stout(ish) beers one day, in a well stocked Bangkok Bar. They had 2 German dark beers, an Australian one, Guinness, and Beer Laos dark; all were much more expensive than Beer Laos dark, and all were much much better too... Gor quite pissed that day.

    Free Beer

I never complain what the beer is if someone else is supplying.

Home / Bar when I am paying, Tiger or Heineken, if beer Laos is available I will have a night on it but its not the be all and end all, just as long as I have quality to roll in my Rizla papers I put up wiht a lot.

Federbrau is a Thai beer option I'm liking quite a bit lately. I like the fact that its allegedly brewed according to German brewing laws which means without chemical additives. So a few less chemicals that aren't any fun anyway is the way I see it. Federbrau kinda reminds me of the no longer available Kloster which i used to like.

My top beer that I used to drink all the time was Aventinus, a very strong but easy to drink weizenbock. I have always thought that was a stellar beer. They carried it at Foodland on Sukhumvit Soi 5, a staple in the beer section there for years but which disappeared about three months ago to be replaced by more bottles of the same varieties of Paulaner and an extra row of Corona. Never liked Paulaner that much and Corona is probably the worst value beer available.

Someone on here was also ranting about Coopers sparkling ale, I agree that's easily the best Coopers and I get that one at Foodland also sometimes, where it is still only 90 baht a bottle as opposed to 130 at most other places.

Also, someone on some other thread pointed out the importance of the date stamped on the labels of any beers brewed in Thailand. I totally agree and have used that as my guide when deciding which Thai beer to buy. The more recently bottled the beer is, the greater the chance it will not taste like you licked the cat's ass and then had a tea made with dirty dish rag squeezings with a couple of tabs of penicillin and maybe a No-doze thrown in, and that wilted cabbage from last week as a garnish.

I think that Singha, if it is fresh, and well kept, can be shockingly good. Rare, but its happened to me a fair few times! San Miguel regular is another. The Lite sometimes tastes faintly of beef or something that it shouldn't. Chang kills me, I get the Chang over effect real bad. I get splitting headaches and joint pain that last two days from only two talls and I usually never get hangovers from anything! I wonder what's in it that does that? Extract of dengue for that extra kick or something.
