    Marmite's Beer Reviews

I was in Carrefour yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised by the choice of beer and bread and the prices too. So I thought that I would do a 'Marmite's Bread Review' thread for you all.

Then I had a better plan and decided to do a beer review thread instead. So here it is.

Sadly, most of the beer is lager or pilsner (same same) which are uninspiring brews at the best of times, but my mate Fabian insists that pale beers are very worthy and I shouldn't base my judgement upon Thai beers. Fair enough.

Talking of Fabs, it reminds me of Friday evening when we were in the Dubliner. I asked a waitress if they have Beer Laos. She replies that "This is Thailand, not Laos!" - I really could've put her down given that opening, but I let it slide as the irony would've been completely lost of the poor lass.

    Anyway, on the the reviews...

    Fürstenberg Premium Lager (Germany)

First up is Fürstenberg Premium Lager. I bought this at Carrefour for 67 Baht, which is not too bad for an imported beer. It comes in at 5.3% which is just above the 5% norm.

After pouring, it quickly lost most of its head. This might've been due to the glass having washing up liquid residue or just that the beer loses its head quickly.

It had a smooth, thick taste. There were no real flavours to speak of and the overall impression was that I wouldn't go out of my way to drink another one of them.

    5 out of 10

Not the most impressive start to the campaign. Let's see what's next in the fridge.

H'mmm, you do realise your critical analysis will become more favourable as you drink more don't Marmite?

I assume you are not the type to swirl and spit.

    Krombacher Pils (Germany)

Next up is Krombacher Pils. This comes in at 4.8% and costs 88 Baht at Carrefour.

When poured, it produced a robust, foamy head. As you can see in the photo, it looked pretty good. Maybe the previous beer got that glass nice and clean?

This beer had a well balanced taste. It was lighter than the Fürstenberg and more enjoyable to drink. The 1/2% less alcohol making a marked difference.

I would drink this one again, but it's still nothing special.

    6.5 out of 10.

I'm not looking forward to the next one.

    Miller Genuine Draft (USA)

Now most people like to knock American beers, and probably for a very good reason, but I am known for my fairness and lack of bias towards the good ole' US of A, so this will be an honest review.

Miller Genuine Draft is bang on the nose at 5% and costs 89 Baht at Carrefour.

Upon pouring, it showed a more compact head than the Krombacher. Maybe this was due to the gas being added artificially rather than the more natural German brewing process. Being a Limey, I'd rather they left the gas out all together, but what would I know.

It had a strange nose. Kind of artificial or 'plasticy'. The taste was very inoffensive and actually it tasted like a weaker beer than the Krombacher. I didn't mind this though, as I prefer a lager to taste of very little. IT had a slightly fruity after-taste, which was quite pleasant. As the beer warmed up, it did what all lagers do and started to taste like shit.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one and would drink it again, but as with the previous beer, I wouldn't order it given the choice of something else.

    Blimey, sabang could be right.

Well you've gotta call it as you see it, but I'm afraid imho Miller is one of the few beers in the world that makes Budweiser shine.
At least you didn't buy the Miller Lite.

    Veltins Pilsner (Germany)

OK, last one for today. Sorry about the blurred photo, but I didn't check it properly.

This is the Veltins Pilsner available from Carrefour for 67 Baht and it is 4.8%.

The head was pretty light, which was unusual for a German beer.

It was much more bitter than the Miller. In fact it was too bitter, as there was no flavour to balance the bitterness. It tasted like it was stronger than 4.8%. I didn't like this one much at all, so I won't bother with it again.

Next time I manage to go to Carrefour, I shall try either the dunkels or the range of Coopers beers (or maybe all of them).

    Cheers!

I would have kicked the cheeky bitch fair in the cvnt.

On to business, good review Marmers but having a person of the English persuasion doing beer reviews is a bit like an Frenchman doing say a review of bath soap.

^ I agree that a Pom doing lager reviews it a bit amiss, as we are used to proper beer with depth of taste and character. I suppose I should've got an Aussie/Kiwi to do it, as these beers are probably pretty good compared with that crap you put out down-under.

Nope. John Smiths is available sometimes, but it's hardly decent.

My criteria for the first four was that they cost under 100 B a bottle. I shall select the next batch on a different criteria.

Because the peas start to complain, and it makes for worse photos.

Anyway, just returned from Carrefour with a couple of Belgians and a couple of Aussies. Will review during the week, as it's against my religion to drink on Sundays.

    Coopers Sparkling Ale (Australia)

I popped down to Carrefour again tonight and picked up another four bottles of piss to review.

First up is Coopers Sparkling Ale which was 105 Baht and comes in at 5.8%.

When poured, it displayed a very frothy head and a very cloudy body. It also had all the yeast particles floating around in it, because this is a bottle conditioned ale.

You can taste the alcohol quite distinctly. It is a bit like Carlsberg Special Brew, but not as syrupy. It had a very sweet but bitter aftertaste, but the nose was quite pleasant.

It was a bit too heavy for me, but it went down quickly enough.

    Coopers Extra Stout (Australia)

Second for tonight is Coopers Extra Stout which is a hefty 6.5% and again 105 Baht.

It pours well and has a good head.

On first taste you get overpowered by the burnt malt. It is way too much. There is also far too much gas. Stout, for me, should be smooth and all that gas puts an edge on the tast that shouldn't be there. It's also very sweet and syrupy.

If this was just a stout, without the 'extra' and had less gas and sugar it would be a decent drop, but as it is at the moment it isn't. It reminds me of ABC stout that you can buy in a few SEA countries. Very disappointing.

It's actually taken me a long time to finish it as I'm too bloated to drink it at a normal speed. I did make one improvement and chucked a couple of ice cubes into it. Much better.
