Leffe Blonde (Belgium)

The first Belgian beer to be reviewed. Leffe Blonde is fairly strong at 6.6% and cost 124 Baht from Carrefour.

It poured pretty well and kept it's head well. If you look at the picture you will see that I got started on i before I took a picture. I was having a fine old time and forgot. Sorry.

It is a pretty sweet beer and tastes much stronger than the Dark Beer Lao, even though it has a very similar strength. It's also much gassier. despite not really liking gassy beers, it does help to negate some of the heaviness and brings it back into balance a bit.

Overall, not too bad for a Belgian beer.

    7 out of 10

    And to continue the theme...

    Leffe Brown (Belgium)

Seeing as we tried the light & dark Beer Laos, we thought it would only be fair to try the blonde & brown Leffes. The Leffe Brown is 6.5% and also cost 124 Baht.

It poured really well and produced a very robust head. It didn't have the burnt malt taste of the Dark Beer Lao. It was more of a typical dunkel, which Fabian seemed quite happy with. Again, typical of Belgian beers, it was very gassy, which detracted from what could've been a really good beer. That being said, I did prefer it over the blonde, so I will give it a too high...

    7.5 out of 10.

Fabs and I were on a roll now, but I only had two bottles in the fridge, so will went halves each.

Pattaya Belgian beer buffs, Manneke Pis Belgian pub/restaurant on Soi Siam Country club has a good range of Belgian beers in the 170-220 Bht price range. Bluddy good food too.

    Maredsous Blonde (Belgium)

I bought this on special at Carrefour the other day. It normally retails at 226 Baht a bottle, but I got it for 126 Baht. It is 6%.

Maredsous is a bottle conditioned ale.

It poured ok, but was very cloudy as bottle conditioned ales tend to be. Upon tasting, it was very sweet, very gassy and very syrupy. Generally, not very impressive at all. It did seem to get a bit better towards then end as it softened a bit as it got warmer, which is always a sign of pedigree in a beer.

That being said, everything about this beer was too much.

    Chimay Trappist Beer (Belgium)

The last beer of the night was the Chimay Trappist Beer. It normally costs 205 Baht (I paid 105 Baht) and is a hefty 7%.

The Chimay is a red beer, rather than a blonde or a brown. As you can see, I drunk it before I managed to take a piccie.

It was pretty gassy, so it had a decent head, but was very cloudy, so I must assume it is also bottle conditioned.

Upon tasting, it is way too sweet and syrupy. I should've used a knife & fork to consume it. After a while a hint of chocolate surfaces, which is not too unpleasant (for a chick).

I'm glad I only had half a bottle of this stuff, as I don't believe you should have to chew your beer.

    5 out of 10.

The Leffe shows that there is hope for Belgian beer, but the last two were prime examples of why I usually avoid them. Gassy and syrupy is the order of the day. Avoid unless you drink beer like wine or you drop a couple of ice cubes in it.

I hope the readers will appreciate all the effort we went through to bring them this well balanced review. We had quite a scientific approach taking notes and having a non beer drinking judge overlooking the testing session.

One minor correction for the moment (my opinion on the beers in detail will follow later): The Leffes were 124.5 each.

They were in the bargain basket at Carrefour. No one in their right mind would pay over 200 Baht for crappy Belgian beer like that.

I will stick to Singha, a reasonably priced local beer that does not have to fly halfway round the world to disappoint you

I agree with most of your reviews here, but of course a few I haven't tried. I do entirely agree with your reviews of Beer Lao and consider it, baht for baht, the best beer available in Thailand, not counting silly priced Euro imports.

Ah...Beer Lao...but 60-Bt or more in Thailand? Ack!

Is available everywhere for a mere 8-Baht a bottle in Laos! Light or dark.
Also, FYI, the Laos brewery now produces Carlsberg beer, under license from Carlsberg.

I picked up some chinese beer in Mai Sai and I found it to be very enjoyable.
I think it was called Hunan but not sure of the name.
Has anyone else tried it ?

Alright, so I will start with my opinion of the beers we tested.

It poured quite well, but lost its head fairly quickly. It has a light, clean taste with a delicate flowery sweetness. Because it is so inoffensive, it is very easy to drink and very moreish. A good session beer.

    7 out of 10.

I am really looking forward to the next one...
I am quite not that enthusiastic with that as Marmite. What he redeems as a refreshing taste reminds me of the bad aftertaste of a beer Chang. It's not that worse though but brngs the rating down to 5.0

It poured very well and had a good head which didn't disappear. The first thing you notice is the nice burnt malt taste. It's not overpowering; it's just there giving the beer just the right amount of flavour. For a strong beer, it is not at all syrupy and I would've guessed that it was much weaker, because it is so well balanced taste-wise.

    Absolutely lovely.

    8.5 out of 10.
Although I normally drink pale beers of the Pilsener variety (which some people who don't know better call Lager as well), sometimes a dark beer is a nice variation of taste and this dark beer was really nice.

The accountant in me has to state that this is although 30% more value for money as it costs he same as the pale beer Lao but got a higher content of alcohol.

    6.0 out of 10

    Mate:

Just going to crack open one of these - (and I like the fact that in Aus you don't need a bottle opener, as they're screw tops)

    3 for A$12

OK-ish beer. Thinking 5.5 but will give it 6 on the basis that I've not had a hangover.

I've just opened my first Victorian Bitter that I brewed with my own fair hand. Don't confuse it with that shit they manufacture in Australia; this is a full flavoured, dark English Bitter.

It has a very hoppy nose and a good bitter taste, almost like a mild Guinness. It's probably about 4 to 4.5% in strength, as although there is a little sweetness, it's not at all syrupy.

Pretty bloody good actually, and will get better with age.

    One down, 47 to go.

I think it may be a little bit stronger than 4.5%, maybe 5 to 5.5%. Jolly good!
