Firstly Loops, Woodford Reserve is not a top shelf premium bourbon. It is a descent bourbon and its about $20 in the states. In fact, it is used by many for old fashions and whiskey sours etc but many drink it neat, especially the rye version which is not Bourbon but Whiskey. We are in agreement that I would NEVER use a top shelf bourbon or whiskey to make a cocktail. The bottle I posted of Angels Envy is a top shelf and that is to be enjoyed neat even at 100 proof. occasionally I may drop in a small ice cube. depends on my mood.
While your argument about adding pure can sugar is weak, you are right in that it is a pure sugar with no flavoring but still completely changes the taste of the bourbon as distilled unless you let it all settle to the bottom but I have to believe you shook it up like a Bacardi breezer. :)
In the end Loops, its your bottle to do what you want with. You can add orange juice to it, pour it down the drain whatever floats your boat. I just stand that in open circles taking a bottle and adding sugar to it seems extremely odd. Most normal people pour some in a glass and add their "Mixer" of choice this way if you have a guest come over that prefers a pour of bourbon neat it will not taste like some weird cheap southern comfort girly drink.
I think you might be onto something there Dill. I noticed when I sipped it neat that it was almost sweet enough to drink which I do not normally find with whisky.
So I ended up only adding 8% syrup to this bad boy when I normally go 15% for a Scottish single malt.
I think you are confusing aroma and taste. When you say you appreciate the taste of a whisky it is not actually the taste you appreciate but the aroma. The olfactory receptors in your nose are far more complex than the gustatory receptors on your tongue.
You are not corrupting the aroma of an expensive whisky by adding sucrose any more than when you add water. But you are certainly corrupting it by adding other cocktail ingredients.

I like the novelty of the smoky whiskies but to me they are by far the least palatable neat and benefit more than any other kind of whisky from a sneaky liqueur conversion
This talk of manning up belies, I suspect, that some fellas find drinking neat whisky more of an endurance than they are letting on.
I have yet to see a single scoffing nay-sayer on this thread actually try adding just 8% sucrose syrup to a single nip of single malt and do a side by side taste test with a straight shot. Try it with a smoker and the difference will be most noticeable.
Two fingers of whisky and one finger of water.
None of that ice, coke, redbull, bucket, liqueur conversion mallarky :)

Honestly I cannot fairly answer that question because it really boils down to the individual. Some say it's based on how long it was distilled, others would say who distilled it.
For me personally I find WhistlePig, Blanton's, Pappy Van Winkle to be outstanding US Whiskeys. From a Scotch point of view, I prefer Macallan 18 or a Glenmorangie 25.
Are they the best, I guess that's up to the drinker but I can say there is no Sugar needed nor ice or water to drink them. :)

If the thought of corrupting a top shelfer is too painful to countenance then choose a middle shelf whisky.
Pour 2 shots and add 8% sucrose syrup to one glass. Stir then mix the glasses up and try to see if you can work out from the aroma which one has been altered. You will not be able to tell and so the essential qualities that are appreciated by the edified whisky connoisseur are unaltered.
Then try sipping one then the other and tell me which one you prefer.
Nope . Not interested Loops. I have no desire to taste test a syrupy whiskey. But again, enjoy yours but expect more Reds if you keep posting pictures from posters. :)
Just buy a bottle of Southern Comfort and drink up. It's cheaper and sweeter just how women like it.

I'm sure it is, or I would be if I didn't think this whole thread was a stupid troll. I was shuddering at the though of drinking southern comfort. It reminds me of childhood cough medicines that I was forced to neck when sick.
Any beverage that originates in the south is most likely sugar laden. On a business trip to Georgia, the client catered lunch, they were adamant about the "southern sweet tea". It was so sugary, I thought I would develop diabetes on the spot.

Perhaps looper should try the whiskies matured in sherry casks to give the flavour he's after...for example, Glenfarclas 15 year-old, or, if you can afford it, Glendronach Parliament.

As I posted earlier, ol Loopers can do whatever he wants with his bottle but he should expect to be abused for doing what he does.
Maybe Loopers should start a liqueur or sugary/syrup spirit thread and he can post all of his concoctions and silly doings there. :)
