    16 little black pigs.

I know next to fuk all about wine other than I either like it or don't but I'm a member of a wine club for a token fee and get a mixed case of 12 bottles every 3 months and the latest offerings arrived today which included a bottle of a South Australian shiraz named 16 little black pigs which I thought a bit of a strange name but it piqued my curiosity to be the first bottle to be opened which it has been and more than half consumed as I type and I must say a mighty fine bottle of red it is too, not sure why it has the name it has, I may get round to reading the label to see if that gives me a clue but highly recommended by me all the same.

Gets a fair write up, but then Oz produces good drinkable shiraz at a cheap price from almost everywhere.

This is the one.......just had another look through the case of wine and actually got 2 bottles of it not 1, good chance both will be consumed tonight.

16 Little Black Pigs Shiraz 2011
Another great extension to the 16 Little Blacks Pigs range from Australia.
A black fruit bomb from our crafty and connected winemaker, Steve Grimley.
Destined to be a classic crowd favourite.

A wonderful cocktail of flavours from the home of fruit-driven wines: South Australia. Named after winemaker Steve Grimley's group of vineyard-dwelling piggies, this Shiraz continues the proud heritage of that hugely popular range. Sourced from perfectly ripe Shiraz grapes from plots across the state, creating the beautifully formed fruit we've come to expect from this varietal. Oozing blackberry and bramble components from nose to tail, soft and silky to the touch. It's pure lifestyle, in a bottle.

it's not an actual winery, it's a made for direct distribution brand (ie wine club) stuff.
    Probably excess cleanskin.
Having said that, you can get really lucky with cleanskin in Oz, as I said, good drinkable shiraz grows on trees there.

Wine is my drink of choice these days and am slowly trying to educate myself about it basically starting from scratch, actually ended up joining the wine club by sort of accident as had bought the misses a GC watch for her birthday and there was some flyer in there for £50 off a case of wine so ordered it and not having bothered to read the small print I'd actually signed up to a club where you pay token amount every month (£30) and send you a mixed case of 12 bottles every 3 months which I like as I get to drink bottles I wouldn't have bought/tried otherwise and you realise there is so much variety to the run of the mill tried and tested stuff you are used to.

A wonderful cocktail of vitriolic miasma from the home of rotten fermented rice and assorted swill: Issan. Named after winemaker Somchai Rottencrotch's group of paddy dwelling rats and vermin, this Lao Khao continues the proud heritage of that hugely popular range of brain rotting 10 baht shots. Sourced from perfectly inedible and poorly warehoused rice from plots across the north eastern whore growing region, creating the beautifully formed piles of rotting surplus we've come to expect from this varietal. Oozing piss stained sarong and multi-layered vomit components from nose to tail, harsh and throat burning to the the touch. It's pure short lifestyle and guaranteed brain damage in a bottle.

Only just after 9pm here in the freezing UK and don't have to start work (buffalo day for the misses) till 11 in the morning so plenty of time to sleep it off.

So you are paying £90 for a case of clean skins each month. You could just go down to the off license to buy random wines.

I'm guessing wine is cheaper in Australia than it is in the UK especially Oz wines and also the bottles they send generally retail for £10-£12 in off licences here on the few I checked so still works out at a reasonable saving plus people who are supposed to know what they're talking about are choosing them.

Fair enough. And yes, Dan Murphy's in Aus will sell drinkable wines for $5-$15 a bottle.

In the UK you can get a bottle for £5-6, drinkable ones are £7-£9 and £10+ for a decent bottle, and it's worth paying the extra few quid as the difference between a £5 and a £10 bottle really is remarkable even to my untrained palate.

Do you know what we mean when we say "cleanskin" BB?

Doesn't mean it's bad, just means it;s not good enough to release under the intended brand/label/vintage.
If a batch tuns out sub par for a $50 or $100 label, you might pick it up as a $2-5 cleanskin, or, the sell it to wholesalers who make up a "winery and pedigree" like 16 pigs and sell it off in direct sales.
You can get some excellent bargains, but are unlikely to find them again due to the nature of the supply.
You never know, you might be drinking almost grange at 2 bucks a glass.

Very true. I have a sibling who worked at Wine Corp, and that's exactly what they do. Sometimes there is nothing wrong with the batch at all, but bad labelling, cancelled orders etc.

If you want to educate yourself about wine here is an excellent website that will help with that.
Although this site is no longer active, he stopped making them when he reached episode 1000, you can go back to past episodes, do searches on different regions, varietals, etc so there's lots to see. The site is worth watching just for Gary Vaynerchuk himself (a big character).
