    Looper's Australian Beer Reviews

Contrary to Marmite's frequent assertion it actually is possible to find a decent brew in Aussie.

It is not all XXXX and VB.

In case anyone finds themeselves washed up on these shores and in search of a drop here are some suggestions.

    Monteiths Black Beer 5.2%
Heavy strong roasted stout style beer with burnt caramel, coffee and chocolate nose. A bit fizzy for this style of beer so let it breathe for a while. Very nice 8/10

    Little Creatures Pale Ale 5.2%
Medium brown, fruity slightly cloudy ale. Soft orange and citrus nose on a mild bitter palate with perfect hops aroma 9/10

    Little Creatures Bright Ale 4.5%
Dark golden summer ale. Similar flavours to the Pale Ale but lighter. Thinner flavours. Slightly harsh metallic bitterness. 4/10.

    White Rabbit Dark Ale 4.9%
Dark brown, bitter fruity richly flavoured with caramel malt. Solid performer. 8/10

    Monteiths is from New Zealand.

There has been a big small brewery expansion in the beer market over here. Lot's of interesting and tasty brews around. As well as lots of stupid low carb 'white' beers for the intellectually retarded.

I like the White Rabbit both dark and white ale. Very tasty.

Is White Rabbit slick and graceful? Zing. Few will get it.

Nice to see more variety coming from the land of Oz, but I freely confess I have heard of none of these brews. Then again, I also remember when they said Aussie's couldn't possibly make decent wine.

^ A lot of people in this country pooh-pooh Australian table wines. This is a
pity, as many fine Australian wines appeal not only to the Australian palette,
but also to the cognoscenti of Great Britain.

"Black Stump Bordeaux" is rightly praised as a peppermint flavoured
Burgundy, whilst a good "Sydney Syrup" can rank with any of the world's
    best sugary wines.

"Chateau Bleu", too, has won many prizes; not least for its taste, and
    its lingering afterburn.

"Old Smokey, 1968" has been compared favourably to a Welsh claret,
whilst the Australian wino society thouroughly recommends a 1970 "Coq du
Rod Laver", which, believe me, has a kick on it like a mule: 8 bottles
of this, and you're really finished -- at the opening of the Sydney
Bridge Club, they were fishing them out of the main sewers every half an
    hour.

Of the sparkling wines, the most famous is "Perth Pink". This is a
bottle with a message in, and the message is BEWARE!. This is not a
wine for drinking -- this is a wine for laying down and avoiding.

Another good fighting wine is "Melbourne Old-and-Yellow", which is
particularly heavy, and should be used only for hand-to-hand combat.

Quite the reverse is true of "Chateau Chunder", which is an Appelachian
controle, specially grown for those keen on regurgitation -- a fine wine
which really opens up the sluices at both ends.

Real emetic fans will also go for a "Hobart Muddy", and a prize winning
"Cuiver Reserve Chateau Bottled Nuit San Wagga Wagga", which has a
    bouquet like an aborigine's armpit.

Chateau Chundadownunda wipes the garlic stained botty of the spotty Gallics these days. For well over a decade now, they've been importing aussie winemakers (on the quiet) to help them catch up. The moneyed twats that pay untolds for those average Grand Cru's are rightly laughed at, both within and without the industry. Actually, they're mostly chinks and they were known to mix it with coke when I lived in hongkers.

I searched high & low for Little Creatures when I was in Perth a few years ago and no one could tell me where to buy it in town.

Luckily, there was Old Speckled Hen & Guinness on tap, so I was sorted.

I have found, as you have also noticed, that Australian brewers like to ruin beers by making them over-gassy.

The Frogs are also getting their arses spanked with English sparkling wines. When will it end?!

When I am working in Perth I always stay at the Esplanade in Fremantle which is 100 meteres across the park from the Little Creatures brewery which is right on the yacht harbour and has a big glass wall so you can watch your beer brewing as you sample the fare. What a great place and nice fish and chips right outside on the working harbour. Freo has great old town and museums too.

I enjoyed the museum at Freo (there's more than one?), but found the place to be a bit daggy. Perth was more enjoyable for me.

One of Australia's original micro breweries is in Freo too.
For a human wave known as the ten pound poms, Freo occupies a certain space in our memories because it was the first place we set foot in Oz. I was pleased to see the old ugly terminal was still standing, but that was ten years ago. Prolly yuppie condo's now.

Dunno I found Perth pretty sterile.

    Why I like Freo:

Old market - good fun to walk round.

Marina - + brewery and fish and chips

    Old town cafe strip

St. Patricks and other 19th century buildings.

    The esplanade

I had a great seafood meal and a boozy white wine afternoon at that Cicerello's. Perth folk must have more money in their pocket than stodgy Adelaideans, or maybe it's the tourism- but they load the price of wine a lot more than you'd be able to get away with in Adelaide.

Good old Coopers Stout, hard to beat if you like a gutsy stout. Certainly not for fairies though.

My favorite Aussie wines were phorphery pearl and blue nun although I never tried the wines myself. Great leg openers and less than a dollar a bottle.

Easy to beat if you don't like fizzy pop.

Mr Fielding, the director of brewing operations, says the German media was astounded when they won the gong.

original review which I was meaning to post:-

Deep golden cloudy with a thin head. Familiar weissbeer palate which always reminds me of bubblegum. Followed by warm floral body with a hint of sour plum in the aftertaste. This is totally delicious. 10/10

...also please note I have availed myself of a craft beer glass so I am no longer obliged to use a gay wine glass, not that it was gay in the first place you understand.

    Atomic Pale Ale 4.7%
Medium Brown, mild warm oatmeal flavours. Easy drinking and very pleasant. Definitely worth a revisit I think.
    Fetching little bottle.
    8/10

    White Rabbit White Ale
Sharp fizzy sweet, hops, flowers, fragrant, light, cloudy 4.5% intersting but not my favourite
    5/10

    Coopers Pale Ale
Light brown clear with fine sustained head.
Very gassy. pleasant and drinkable with warm hoppy aroma. Mild grain flavours. Not a knockout but a pleasant easy drink. Suggest opening and pouring into glass then leaving to sit in fridge for half an hour to let the fizz settle down.
    6/10

Burleigh Brewery 28 70's style pale ale
Another cracking brew from those beer wizards at Burleigh Brewery. The Hef was outstanding and this totally different brew is equally as good as its closest competitor in the field - Little Creatures pale ale.
    9/10
