    History

    TW
Excuse me for a post not exactly along thread lines. Your "Thai history research paper," comment has opened another potential door for me.

I have looked, somewhat shoddily I assume, for a version of Thai history that is NOT written by a foreign source.

My question is where do I look for an true (in your opinion) history by a Thai that has been translated.

Same here. You can read, listen and observe but there always seem to be more questions than answers.

Thanks again for a great thread.

Thank you guys for all your support. I may not know everything, but I normally try to get information from experts, plus read any books available. I totally understand that there always will be questions, even a Thai (like me) has a very hard time understanding our own culture and belief.

Sorry to say that I have not found any history book written by Thai translated to English. All of my Thai history resources are from Thai versions. I have read a few foreign written ones, and while the stories are close, they are not correct.

I do have a link for a true Thai history listed below:
    Thai Heritage Treasury
Thanks to the Internet world, I don't have to run to the library as often. This Web Site is all in Thai, but it is loaded with information of the nation, religion and monarchy. It even contains information of some of the wars in which Thai were involved. Maybe your Thai partner could help to translate it, and it may not be a bad thing for you two to do together. If you need more help, I will be here if needed.

I also own a book called "PhromMaChart". This 680 page book contains information of astrology and how it affects our lives. Half of this book also lists the do and don't for many Thai ceremonies. This is the main book I used for this thread. My book is for the average person, but there is a full version that is used by Buddhist Monks and Brahman priests. Not only is that a lot bigger book, but it is more complicated to follow.

This spirit house thing is really something.
My wife is educated but she still believes this stuff.
when we built the house we had to get some voodoo dude to come in and tell us where the spirit house should be put. everything is according to the instructions herein, except here all them are facing East around here..

Then a month ago when we had new type tile roof and new ceilings put in/on the house the wifey said that she had to spiffy up the spirit house and new garlands and a bunch of stuff,, said the spirits might be pissed that we did so much to our house that they wanted something done to theirs..Now that after her folks spent all that money on an education.. Whew..

    Just whats happening,

Formal education should keep you from believing in superstition to heavily.
Like never sleep with the head of the bed to the west, can't cremate on the weekday you were born, more bullshit to clutter up your life.

It should preclude you from believing in a religion too, but for many they still manage to get brainwashed.

Here are a couple of pictures of a communal spirit house on Soi Theprassit, up until about 8 years ago this was surrounded by fields and was at the entrance of a soi leading to about 10 houses, of course at that time it didn't have security grills on it and had a wooden tiled roof.

    Our spirit house

Finally remembered to take a shot of our spirit house here in the "orchard".

Happened to be around sunset so it turns out pretty decent.

    Rural Spirit house

This one is on the road near Silver Lake on the way to Ban Chang, this is obviously a village spirit house, but for some reason they are dumping the old ones here aswell, not sure why that is happening, they have another dumping place of old spirit houses about 1km down the road going towards Pattaya.

Ok we can see the tree is revered here, but what made the Thais decide this would be a good place to dump unlucky spirit houses?

You still got 4 votes in the semi-final, even without submitting an entry.

"Thanks" to all who took the time to post here. This is an interesting thread full of useful information.

I noticed that only a handful of families on our soi would continuously maintain the spirit house that was placed at the end of it. Are there traditions about who maintains the spirit houses in these situations? (hope I did not miss this in the threads, apologies if I did).
