Sala kaew ku - Nong Khai

Amazing - 20 baht entrance fee donation.

Photographs don't do this place justice as you can't guage the size of the statues.

My favourite and the most photographed.

    More to follow.

    Good stuff, Hooter.

How come they have two different versions of Buddha in the same place?

^ Mate I think the guy that created it was an Indian chappie and he brought together in the temple grounds all the 'images' of Bhudda from around the world.

    The combination is truely amazing.

The temple grounds have piped 'gong' music, pretty surreal.

They have a couple of ponds in the grounds teaming with large carp and catfish, buy them food at 10 baht a pop and watch the water come alive.

wow, this place looks amazing. Nong Khai is on my lists of places to visit, so maybe I need to figure how to get there from Chiang Mai.

    Thanks for the thread!

Great snaps! I love this place and it was the first time in a few years that I took pictures. All of the designs are by a Laotian monk (he also has a park east of Vientianne, where his masterpiece is the hell, earth, and heaven house -- really fekin Daliesque). He escaped from Laos in the early 70s I think (when the commies took over) and headed across to Thailand, where he started this park (not really a temple). All of his designs were made by laymen, who created the base structures out of brick. (Alot of the basic brick piles were near the entrance when I was there.) Then the cement was moulded around to complete the often intricate designs. Yes, bladdy huge! A pity it is not kept in better repair.
The monk passed away in ? He took from all religions for his stuff.

My favourite is the parade of personified dogs behind the elephant. The dog family in the cadillac convertible, the gang smoking, drinking and gambling at a small table. Many of the males had penile erectus, if I remember right. And all of them had rayban type shades on. Obviously the monk's vision of humanity and its many sins. All the doggies parading behind what I took to be the pink elephant -- ie, life is a sham.

From what I remember of the "sculpture" below -- you have to walk through the mouth gate, right? Then you start on the left and walk round. Basically, the circle of life.

A pity there is no English info.

I meant, I had not taken any photos for a few years before I went there (had enough of temples and beach shots). I did not mean I had added any here, but I love seeing the photos added on this thread. Kao jai mai, ka?
