    Chanthaburi: Wat Khao Sukim

Start with a reference from the archives, dated 2010, shortly before we moved to Chanthaburi March 2011, and since then many visits to Wat Khao Sukim. More to follow ....

Situated on a hill covering an area of some 1,320 acres, Wat Khao Sukim was built in 1966 by devout Buddhists who had faith in Phra Achan Somchai Thitawiriyo. The objective of the temple is to be used as a meditation venue. The expansive temple compound offers a peaceful haven surrounded by shady orchards. The temple also houses a large collection of religious items and valuable antiques donated by the public. On display are wax sculptures of over twenty Buddhist monks highly revered by the public. In the temples newly built Ubosot (ceremonial hall), mural painting created by Chakrabhand Posayakrit, National Thai Artist in Painting of the year 2000, can be appreciated. The temple is near Khao Khitchakut National Park, 20 kilometres from downtown Chanthaburi and can be reached through three accesses branching off Sukhumvit Road (Highway No. 3):- at Km. 305 (Ban Huai Sathon); at the Ban Noen Sung intersection; or at Km. 324 (Khao Rai Ya intersection)

Getting there ... heading south on Sukhumvit, inland/east, signposted from Tung Bencha/Benja turn left at traffic lights, or continue on a further 10km to the major intersection at Noen Sung. Either way, can't get lost just follow the signs

For me, an easy cycle route from home which loops the temple hills, just the two crossings of Sukhumvit to survive then back on low-traffic rural roads

Avoiding Tung Benja, Sukhumvit is up to 9 lanes there, I take a side road 2km south, opposite the local landmark, the pandas

and more 'wildlife' this is outside an orchard on the road from Noen Sung, from here you'll get a first glimpse of the temple building under construction on the hill/mountain of Khao Sukim

These two are not my own pics, drone views showing some of the Wat Khao Sukim grounds, huge area with bush trails, lakes, buildings on several levels, the main feature is the temple building under construction which looks to be a very long-term project, just occasional bursts of progress in the past 10 years

Tung Bencha/Benja heading south, left at second traffic lights

Through the entranceway, straight ahead is a small hospital, take the right up the hill to the lower lake and carpark

another borrowed drone pic, shows hospital; the temple grounds are spread over this hill area

Road to the main carpark passes by the lower lake, walking trail from here over the red iron bridge

Maybe this will be developed in future, but for now , peacefully away from the main temple areas

Lower lake. Turtles, fish. Trees. The occasional monitor lizard.

The busloads of tourists go past here to the main lake, carpark, and take the cablecar up the hill.

    Peaceful.

    Wat Khao Sukim, carpark level
Pre-Covid there'd be tour buses, crowded on weekends, numerous food stalls lining the carpark.

But wait there's more ... for me the real attraction* off Wat Khao Sukim is the four museum halls, from recovered Khmer items, Chinese heritage, through to displays of technology, it's like a giant second hand shop

    * and a good place to stop on a bike ride
