Phra Khiri Khan, and being chased by a wild elephant.

Always nice to go for a bit of a drive, so popped on down to the white sands of Sam Roi Yot national park in Prachuap Khiri Khan, and then the elephant ridden mountains that lead up to the Myanmar border behind.

Sweet... we're going to see some elephants.

There certainly be some motorbike riding roads in them there hills.

    ...and finally some elephants.

bloody place is riddled with them down there.

Then there was an elephant that looked a lot bigger/meaner/more elephant like than all the others standing on the road in front of me, like he owned the place...

Now as there's a sign up asking you not to feed them, they're obviously pretty friendly like... surely he wouldn't mind some fucknob in a motorbike helmet going in for some close ups eh...

I blurred out me bike coz I don't want any of ye freaks, pervs n weirdos stalking me, but other than that the next five pics are as they were in me camera.

Now when a wild bull elephant the size of a house charges at you at full pelt from 5 metres away, as you stand there in your flip-flops in the middle of nowhere like some total tool, it well, gets your heart pumping.

After first shitting meself, then getting a fair bit back he started going over to me bike, which I honestly thought he was gonna flip over and squash for a bit of fun.

He obviously fancied it as after a few minutes his knob grew to about the lenght of my body...

So just as I was about to be forced to sit back and watch my bike be forcefully raped by an elephant, suddenly a Hilux came along with some yank and his wife in the back.

They were saying that it's lucky that I turned the engine off as it really gets them angry, and they usually chase the motorbikes that drive past. So as he already had it in for me, it was agreed that I would drive around the blindside as they drove past, them already having scared it down to where it was before fucknob ran up to it in his bike helmet and sandles.

    Ciao...

whilst driving out of the park I noticed a new sign had gone up.

all in all, not a bad bit of riding.

I'll tell ya one thing mate, the bastard couldn't half move... the first thing to go through my mind after the intial 'Jaysus!' was if I could remember reading that elephants can actually outrun the average human. He was a lot faster than me over the first 5 metres, then my agility got the better of him. Nearly bloody crap'd myself.

and just researching it now... apparently:

Some old records state around 30 km/hour. The only tests I heard about though, were made with 42 elephants on 30 meter distance in Surin, Thailand 10 times a day, which gave a record of 24 km per hour for the fastest elephant, while only three elephants ran faster than 15 km/hour. I doubt that you can run away from a attacking elephant... But since they are walking on "pillars", they can only keep this speed for a very short time. At speed over ap 16 km ph they change from a fast walking to a "jumping" running, where at least one foot is on the ground.

He couldn't chase you down so he had to do a cock display just in case you thought you got the better of him.

On the coast between hua hin and sam roi yot.

Prolly at the second from bottom white dot on this map.

Quite a few resorts around there, kinda honeymoon package places.

Not sure hanging around to take pics of a wild elephant is the smartest thing to do, certainly took a lot of balls though.
    Good thread CM

Loads of accommodation and some nice restaurants too from upmarket expensive to the typical Thai-priced places. Mainly Thais coming from Bangkok for weekends/ holidays. Beaches are deserted for most of the week. Follow the road around the mountain and the beaches are even better and more deserted but little accomodation and just a few eating places with good food.

If you were driving a long-wheelbase Landrover painted grey it would have raped it for sure !

We had two totally trashed in Tanzania so we painted the others with
    'Dayglow' orange zebra srtripes !!!

    Kao Kalok

It is indeed Kao Kalok. Very pleasant too. If you stay there though take your own amusement. The few restaurants close around 9pm. Take a hike up the large rocky hill for outstanding views. Walk a couple of miles on the beach to the posh Spa Resorts and gape at the tourists who are paying upwards of £600 per night.

Great pix, excellent thread. I've heard of a guy who came upon a wild elephant on that road. He was driving a Fortuner but was still freaking out. I've bought land near there, well about 30 kms away. When I go exploring I think I'll stay belted into my Triton.

Good stuff, CM. Bit disappointed that the wild elephant wasn't actually in your back garden, but I guess you can't have everything.
