Alert: Monkeying Around in Lopburi Can Be Dangerous!!!!!

Made the trip to Lopburi and had a great time. Stayed at a decent hotel and even found the only farang place in the city owned by an 88 year old man from Belgian! The good times, however, are for another thread and another time.

I just wanted to post this as warning to all members that have kids to be careful in the city of Lopburi. We had went to the ruins that have hundreds of monkeys running around. They were pretty calm and I got some decent pictures. Suddenly, several of them got irritated with some farangs and several jumped on some of the tourists. A farang child and my wife were bitten and had to go the clinic.

My missus had a monkey jump on her and bite her pretty bad. It esulted in a trip to the clinic for tetanus and rabies shots.

It seems to be very common. As soon as she was bit, a samlor driver approached and offered to take us to the clinic. A couple of blocks away we found about 4 clinics in a row with signs for rabies shots. The doc said in the high season there is a steady stream of farangs in and out of her office that have been bitten.

Pretty pricey as well - 1500 baht. I am not sure, but believe they had a two tier pricing system. She also has to have 4 more rabies shots.

Here is a pic of the bite after the doctor cleaned up the blood.

Two tier pricing? They raped you
My son got bitten by a monkey at Golden Beach a few years ago, took him to the government hospital, he had to have about 10 stitches between the 2 wounds, tetnus and I think 6 rabies shots over a period of a month? Whole lot came to less than 3,000baht and that was with the first few days with them cleaning the wounds.

I figured as much, but wanted to get it cleaned right quick.

She was pretty scared, so I really did not care about the price at the time.

My after thought was about how the samlor diver was waiting and acted so concerned offering to take us to the clinic. Commission maybe??

Those monkeys are horrible and reak of piss.

The locals keep them in check with those BB guns that shoot the plastic balls.

Wish I had one to have some target practice with.

I've been bitten by a monkey on more than one occasion, and never bothered having a rabies shot. Nothing wrong with me.

Excuse me for a minute, while I howl a the Moon.

The doctor even mentioned getting an HIV test in case the monkey was infected.

In the first place, there is a window period that HIV does not show and also monkey saliva can't transmit HIV.

Stupid doctor. But still smart enough to get my 1500 baht

I saw a shop keeper blasting the monkeys with one of those plastic pellet BB guns and it sure looked like fun.

Bet it would make one hell of a tourist attraction also.

None. All are shot on sight. Them little gerbils are even more fun to pick off as they scuttle down the sidewalk.

I went with a group of guys that had been staying in Lop Buri for a couple months. They advised to carry a sturdy stick. That's what we did. The monkeys never came near us.
