This is quite an ordinary, informative thread.

Mor Chit is one of the major public transport 'knots' for travel in Thailand, most visitors and expats will come to use it at some time. Most buses to North Thailand and Isaan (North-East) from Bangkok depart and arrive here.

Tucked away in the Northern part of Bangkok, east of Chatuchak park and weekend market, it does not connect to the skytrain nor underground, which both pass the old, defunct Morchit and end at Chatuchak - a brilliant bit of city planning.

    People waiting outside:

Tickets to Isaan destinations upstairs, for the North on the ground floor:

Several private bus-companies are competing with the state-run Bor-Koh-Sor, which means there are a number of windows, near to each other, offering tickets to the same destination.

Prices are very similar, but check departure times of the different class buses - 2nd, 1st, VIP - before buying a ticket.

Some signs are in English, the Thai/American 1st floor means ground floor elsewhere. But basically it is geared predominantly for the Thai traveller, one needs to ask around a bit.

Buses to Central Thailand depart from here as well, as it is on the route to the North.
Also a small selection to Eastern destinations, such as Pattaya and Chantaburi.

Yeah, always loved the part about almost busting my ankles navigating thru the chunks of torn-up pavement 'round there...

Do you think the escalators that go from the second floor down to the bus loading area are always off because of poor maintenance or because so many Isaan people don't know how to use them?

I would say the latter. The MIL was shit-scared of the escalators. Couldn't get her anywhere near them !!

The other day I was shopping at Klang Plaza, a multi-storied department store here in Korat. At one point, while going down to the ground floor, I saw a woman about my age simply frozen in front of the escalator. I held out my arm, she grabbed it and held on tight until she was safely planted on the ground floor landing.

Good on ya BH, you are a gentleman.

I remember fondly my sil going to the airport once and walking up and down every single stair case instead of taking the escalator like we were. Suddenly she got to oe where there was no stair option at all. Classic.

My grandmother in Birmingham hated elevators and escalators. I used to offer her a helping hand to get her on and off them- this was in the 1980's.

Then there was the time I had to virtually drag her into an elevator occupied by people of a South Asian persuasion. In those days, Brum was still mostly Caucasian.

Had the same coming up from the MRT the other day. She was only in her 20s but I think it was more to do with her not being used to wearing proper shoes with high heels than fear of technology.

In that case I may go back to Klang Plaza today and see if any younger ones with high heels need my help.

We once took MIL and BIL's with families to Bangkok, they spent half a day enjoying themselves at Paragon with the escalators. Escalators was the preferred transport as they at the same time could look at people. From North Thailand, not Issarn though.

Arriving at Mor Chit, one is greeted by touts advertising taxi-services as one descends from the bus to collect one's luggage. Nothing more irritating than to have to manoevre around these guys with heavy bags on hand after an overnight journey.
Besides, a very short walk away at the exit there are queues of metered taxis waiting for customers.

For the adventurous traveller, there is a bus-station for local transport, a fact I was oblivious to for years.

At the arrival area, proceed to the corner with the 7/11 and "toilets" for a passageway to departures if you need another over-land bus, or to the local bus-station:

Just as you are about to enter a market arcade sort of thing, it is either straight on to the local buses or a right-turn through the shopping area to Mor Chit departure terminal:

Inside the maze of street-stall lined walkways, all the essential Thai shopping needs are catered for, from mobile phones to jeans and T-shirts.

    Most importantly, lots of eateries:

One thing that pisses me off about escalators is the fact they have to time it right to step on right in the middle or have two people in front blocking everybody behind. It is really fooking annoying to be four people back and you can see people rushing to get the skytrain below yet nobody moves to one side. It's pure bone idleness; an excuse to chat longer.

There is a bridge connecting the MBK to Siam square on floor two with a conveyer belt about 10 metres long running one way at snails pace, they approach it with caution, step on and idlely chat bollox untill the end; I wish they could understand it is a means to get around with more ease.

I secretly want to punch slow walking people in the head

Oh, Stroller good thread by the way

Yeah, I am surprised there are no carts selling noodle-soup on escalators and conveyor belts.
