Mendip should have taken his boat and casting net, he could have headed out to them islands.

Koh Chang is known for its diverse marine life, including various types of fish. Popular catches include barracuda, cobia, grouper, king mackerel, longtail tuna, snapper, and trevally. Divers and snorkelers can also spot reef fish like angelfish, butterflyfish, damselfish, wrasses, parrotfish, surgeonfish, and groupers. Additionally, the area is known for occasional sightings of whale sharks aka the big boned Mendip.

Hooked up an old hard drive to see some pics from when I took me mum, sister and GF of the time there in 2010.

Won't hijack the thread or bore people to death with posting a zillion photos.

We were staying in Warapura and got a boat back to there from Bang Bao 1 or 2 days. It was my mum's favourite beach on KC. The boat back wasn't planned, I think someone at a resto there hooked up an old fishing couple to ferry us back up the coast.

Maybe the kid would like a day out fishing on a rickety wooden fishing boat?

    Have a great time, Mendo.

Back there last time we hired a boat for an afternoon, a fishing boat, a big one with a proper cabin etc arranged by that English Bird i mentioned off Bang Bao pier, took us round the islands and gave us lunch. was 1,000thb, Mrs Toot reckoned i'd paid too much but she's tighter than a duck....frugal, frugal is the word i want. seemed a bargain to me

^ Made me remember that there are lots of one day 4 or 5 stop snorkeling boat trips from there.

The 3, I think, times I went there the people with me didn't want to go out on boats and I did enough snorkeling in Egypt and Aus to not really care about it too much.

OK, I'll put a tenner on that.

First morning I got up early for a spot of fishing while the daughter was having a lie-in... and the bladdy sea had disappeared.

A bit of research showed that the Gulf of Thailand id unusual in only having one low and high tide per day, instead of the usual two. This meant that I'd have to wait until later afternoon for high tide. I don't seem to remember this during past holidays here and Rayong or maybe I've just been lucky with the tide times before and not noticed?

One thing I did notice was that there was a load of small fishing vessels out in the bay, and started to wonder whether I could still cast into deep water from the end of the pier... which turned out to be a moot point. As I pondered this the persistent drizzle gave way to a storm that came in from offshore...

And soon not only the sea, but everything else disappeared as well. It was pissing it down.

I'm slightly pissed off about this. The past two years our summer holidays to the UK have been spoiled by persistent rain so I decided to stay local this year. So far, it's barely stopped raining since we arrived on Koh Chang and I hear that the UK is having one heat wave after another.

Thank fukk we packed the Scrabble.

The rain finally stopped mid-afternoon so we went to stock up at 7-Eleven and then to keep the daughter happy I typed 'pizza bear me' into Google Maps and off we set.

Google wanted me to drive across this bridge, and after considering it briefly, common sense prevailed and I parked up.

The drizzle had actually stopped and it was a pleasant ten minute walk to the pizza place. (I later discovered that had we driven on for another km or so, we could have approached this area by car from the other direction)

    It was just the job.

And a couple of Changs and lunch later this was finally starting to feel like a holiday!

And just to teach the daughter that there's no such thing as a free lunch, I made her carry two take-away pizzas back to the car for dinner later.

With the tide coming in nicely and the rain stopped, it seemed rude not to try a bit of late afternoon fishing.

The daughter's grown out of doing this kind of stuff with her dad. Not so long ago she would have come along with me.

The whole place seems to b pretty deserted and I had the pier completely to meself.

I started with this white and red lure, but no luck.

Then this floating silver lure that dived down as you wound it in.

    But no luck.

Then I gave this heavy, solid metal lure to see if the fish were deep down.

But no luck and I lost it, snagged on the bottom third cast.

In fact I didn't get a single pull and was starting to get a bit descendant when the daughter started to send me these weird Whatsapp messages...

    'Sitting comfortably'?
    'Glug glug, nice beer'?
    'Dad... that's disgusting!!!'
It was then that I realised she'd been watching me through the binoculars, peeing into the sea...

    There's no privacy, anywhere.

Anyway, I'd had enough... but stopped for one last cast on the way back...

    Yep... I've still got it!

A very greedy, juvenile giant grouper... I think.

This one went back, but at least I know that fish are out there.

Yes Mike, that's Bang Boa Pier. Most of the buildings are close to land. We're heading over there soon for a bit of souvenir shopping and a seafood lunch... while it's raining.

Nice to some pics of Koh Chang with blue skies and the sun out. It must be a different place outside of the wet season.

A procession of dive/snorkelling boats leave Bang Boa Pier in the morning. I don't like snorkelling and the daughter doesn't like snorkelling or boats, so we won't be partaking. But, I am interested in a deep sea fishing trip one day this week. I need to work on the daughter.

The first time I went snorkeling off a boat I looked under the water and there were loads of fish feasting on the scab of a bike accident on my leg. I've hated deep water ever since.

The spotty fish according to AI is a longfin grouper that starts life as female and turns into a male, the opposite to the creatures Mendy encounters on his passport runs
