    Koh Yao Yai get away.

Wife and I headed off on a week trip to Koh Yao Yai. I always like these trips because you cover all 3 transportation methods; Land, Air and Sea.

Trip there was pretty smooth albeit the sea part was a fun ride as the oceans were quite rough as it was storming as we left the mainland and my wife and this other gal on board white knuckled it. . Nice boat and only 4 people.

Got to dock and rain was still coming down. You get an umbrella and you walk to the hotel check in.

Got all checked in and headed to the pool bar.

Caught happy hour and got a double Stoli on the rocks and wife had a very nice Mojito

    Grabbed a late afternoon lunch

Our room was a pool villa with an outstanding private pool and Jacuzzi. We got settled in and I relaxed in the pool.

My morning view before I jogged along the beach. When its not raining, the pier has a real nice bar at the end to enjoy. Its still got a long way to go to recover from Covid. The resort itself is pretty empty, lots of things you can do but it is clearly understaffed right now.

My view from the pool as a nice tropical storm blew in.

The island itself is very small. There are a few other resorts but this is designed to be an all inclusive type stay and you really do not go off as it has everything here. The weather has been on and off rain as one would expect this time of year.

Looks amazing. Shame you picked Monsoon season for a visit

My son and daughter head to Thailand in a couple of weeks.
I told them to stay away from Phuket and go to Samui as the rainy season starts later there...Is that right?

Sadly, the Andaman Sea, including Phang Nga Bay where you are, the weather is going to be crap for the next week. You're on the east coast of the island though, so will be tempered slightly. In clearer weather, you would get great views towards Krabi, especially of the small islands inbetween such as Koh Hong.

That pool looks nice. Doesn't matter if it's raining if you're in there. Just stick an umbrella in your drink.

What does that warning sign say?

No walking along the edge with the 200 foot drop?

Exactly, and as Syb said on another post i quite enjoy sitting back watching it rain, forces you to relax and slow down. If you get a bit bored JPPR you could always trim some shrubs. Looks great.

Yep and it's easily that with nothing to stop you from a rolling header into rock shoreline. Bet someone has done it...

Yeah it's monsoon season but you make it what it is. I never have a bad time. Upside though, it is not packed with douchey tourists. Good thing is it rain is on and off.

I reckon monsoon season is great, 39 minutes rain each day. Slightly lower temps. Less tourists. Who cares if it’s not all blue skies!

    seafood bbq dinner?

Actually add to that significantly lower rates. The Temps have been perfect. About 21/22c. Nice breeze.

The big Seafood throw down dinner is tomorrow night. Ordered it all up in advance this evening.

Love yer style Stumpy I've never heard of this place. Looks brilliant if doing it in the Stumpy way. I bet you were pretty chuffed to find a bar at the end of that long jetty. Keep em coming.

Not really. A work colleague was struck by a bolt of lightning on top of a mountain in southern Laos while erecting a radio antenna that was needed to cover a " communication grey area" poor bugger trying to make shit safer killed him. A lao colleague who was about 4 metres away when he was struck is still pretty fucked up from witnessing that

Not sure if you're still there, however should you want a small excursion, tomorrow (Thursday/4th) the weather is looking reasonable for a longtail boat to one of the small islands not far from you. The forecast is sun/cloud but importantly little wind which means a low wave height (prevailing wind/waves are coming from the west at the moment so you're in the lee of Koh Yao Yai anyway).

These islands are uninhabited and given the lack of tour groups which spoil these places in more normal times, it would be worth getting the resort to pack you a lunch and some beverages and some Robinson Crusoe time.

This is my boat in that same area a few years ago, with Koh Yao Yai in the background. Great to BBQ some ribs on a deserted beach, some chilled white wine and a bit of snorkling.

Thanks for the recommendations PAG. Yeah we are still here. With the weather reasonably unpredictable we decided to just chill around the resort. A previous trip this way we coordinated a boat for an all day excursion to snorkle and boat around. 8k baht for the entire day including lunch and we went everywhere and stayed off the beaten path away from boats loaded with tourists. Great time for sure. Flew my drone right off the bow.

Today has been just beautiful, On and off blue skies.

Our view from Breakfast. We waited while they set up our table

    Beauty day

Gotta love an uninhabited beach to go run and relax on. I really wanted to fly my new drone over the area but decided to pass. While they have a "No Drone flying" on resort property rule, I could have easily gone off property and did a fly over the beach area but the weather just wasn't that scenic and I didn't pack my ND filters.

Thanks BLD, The island is very easy going this time of year. Few honeymooners here with their families. They are kicking it down and having fun. Yes finding the pool bar after the full day trek here was nice. Just took the edge right off and we watched some really nice lightning rain shows across the water. I have seen some pics of the place at peak season and doubt I would ever want to come. Beaches jammed with people, all the pools are packed with sun screened up tourists and the rooms are double even triple the price that we are paying now. The villa to the left and right of us are vacant until Friday.

Today, while my wife was enjoying the pool, the pool maintenance guy came by to check on a few things and we had an interesting chat. So the Seawater Pool Villas use water from the ocean to fill and maintain the pool. The guy took me on a tour underneath as I was curious. I didn't take any pics because I wasn't sure if it was cool. Anyway they have a 3" pick up line that runs down to the ocean and goes out 50 meters off shore. The water is pumped up into a holding tank underneath then it runs through a multiple bank filter set up, then into the pool. Its a pretty sophisticated system. I did not know this but it explains why when I got out of the pool, it felt like I had been swimming in the ocean.

Yep, same me DW. I can live with a bit of rain and cooler weather versus the other option. The resort also has a very "Un Thai" like stocked bar. What I mean by that its not just Leo, Singha, Chang, JW, Sangsom and Absolut etc. They have a descent variety of beer, Stoli and Grey goose Vodka, Makers Mark Bourbon, Woodford reserve and a host of others above average spirits Gin and Rum.

I had a few Whiskey Sours last night and they were quite tasty with dinner on the beach.
