Did you go there in a van with a few friends and a rather large dog, by any chance?

^ Would have been safer than going alone! He didn’t worry at all about running into some derelict Somchais camping out in there.

It seems, dear Ms. Kitt, that after so many publicising about Thai life you haven't learned much about the real Thai life.
If running into some - surely not "derelict Somchais" (if you meant Thai people?) - but rather into some "derelict falangs".

Thai people would not reside in such abandoned object, even not for a short snack, being afraid of some residing ghosts...

That fact had helped to me and my wife some time ago to buy quite cheaply similar 10 years abandoned house that nobody wanted to buy. Although not such a large mansion of a drug lord, but a fair house built allegedly by a big policeman for his mia noi until his mia luang did not discover it.

Thai people will just help themselves with anything what is possible to remove but afterwards will hurry up away...

In my case not much different looking inside as shown in the video above, even the window frames taken:

So, it was a good decision, a love at first sight with that place, reconstructed as D-I-Y within 3 months...

So, I would recommend to the one who is browsing around the mansion above, to buy it, he will get it for a kiss from the bank and - if not afraid of ghosts - can re-build it, getting really grandiose dwelling for a fraction of when built from a scratch.
