The place is now full of posh middles class teenagers taking selfies to show thier friends on facebook how cooool they are. Safe in the knowledge that daddy is only a phone call away.
The days of the real travelers are long gone and the KSR reflects this.

Yeah, not my cup of tea at all. Neighboring Soi Rambutri is much nicer, though. Decent Thaifood and ice cold beers- seems to be getting more crowded and just overflow from KSR every year though, which is a shame. Sad as it may be, I always stay around lower suk- decent food, nice hotels with sky pools for that view, easy sky-train to the Siam area for shopping and the nightlife is fun for a few nights. Heck, I spend most holidays in Pattaya so I am the last person you want to talk to about finding the 'real Thailand', whatever that means 555

Love it or hate it, the Koh San road is a good place to base yourself for a couple of days while you plan your trip around Thailand.

Some unusual sights and good for people watching.

Anymore than a couple of days there then you've lost the plot.

A few more random pics from the area..

Haven't been on a night out since 2011 down there. Been through a few times in the day, which can be quite horrific.

I'm due a night out there at some point, just to reassure myself it's gone downhill.

Start at the Gecko bar behind the temple, have a couple of tall ones to get you lubricated then follow the well beaten path to the road, loads of talent

I first went to Khao San road in 1994. It was still small then.

Last time I was there was 2002 - it was depressing to be b/c it had expanded so much.

Nowadays, I wouldn't even think of going there.

My first Thai green curry in Thailand and what an utter disappointment.
Half a plate of warm lettuce covered in warm mayo with a tomato in the middle next to the worst Thai green curry ever.
150 baht! That'll teach me to dine at them posh restaurants in Banglamphu.

The evenings cabaret was lively enough.

    I have a confession ...

I've never actually visited Koh San Road

Nor felt a compulsion to go there either.

    Except ...

Apparently the area does have a 1/2 decent band scene and that interests me.

For my past sins ... Hail Mary, Hail Mary, Hail Mary

Worth a trip even if it's just for a day, just to see what all the fuss is about.

Khaosan Road in Bangkok is considered a backpackers’ heaven, the center of the budget tourism trade in Thailand. The place is an almost unending stretch of music bars, hawkers selling cheap clothing and other accessories, food stalls, tattoo parlors, restaurants and clubs. There is something for everyone, from the Volkswagen bus bars at the low end to the polished and sophisticated nightclubs with their neon lights. Check out some of the top spots right here.

The Khao San Road in Pictures-brick-bar-650x488-jpg

The Brick Bar has an upbeat tempo and plays happy pop-style music that has people singing along and dancing – even on the tables. Though the place has visiting bands playing live from time-to-time, the house band is arguably one of the best in the entire Khaosan area. Though the clientèle is mostly Thai, the spot boasts a great atmosphere and is located on the main street behind McDonald’s. Drinks are a little pricier than the average Khaosan bar, but the music more than makes up for it.

    Roof Bar

If you want to enjoy one of the best acoustic live band performances, complete with classics from Billy Joel to Oasis, the Roof is where you should be. The place is more expensive than the standard run-of-the-mill Khaosan bar, and people pay for the chilled out atmosphere. Take in the madness of Khaosan one sip at a time with a view from the balcony, all with the best Brit pop hits in the background.

    Silk Bar

Looking for something modern and upmarket? The Silk Bar is the place for the trendy crowd to visit, see and be seen and sip cool high balls well into the Bangkok night. Stylish interiors and an international feel gives this place an elevated status, with international fusion food and music to match. They even have a raised terrace where you can drink and dine al fresco, observing the passersby on Khaosan below.

Nearly every other bar has a live band or singer on.

If you like Ska then the Brick bar is a must.

The Gecko bar is a legendary spot on Rambuttri. The people watching from this bar is brilliant, the beers are cheap and if ya hang around long enough things kick off.

One of my favorite places in the Khao San area.

Same girls been running this bar for ever and no one fuks them around. Bad mean bitches if some nasty farang scum plays up.

The whole area and streets are full with live bands, great bars and blinding looking Farang and Thai pussy.

The punters who do not like it either are the Mongering scum or simply punters who have never ventured off The KhaoSan Road.

Been there and bought the t- shirt.
The old bints were always friendly enough with us, used to neck a couple of Chang before having a mooch about and some dinner.
