    A weekend in Hua Hin

Me 'n' GoW took off to Hua Hin for the Songkran holidays and stayed a few kms south of the town next door to Peace Blondie from Ajarn & TV fame.

It was a bit hot walking along the beach and I got a wee bit burnt.

It's not too bad now though.

    Phra Ratchaniwet Maruekkhathaiyawan Palace

    Phra Ratchaniwet Maruekkhathaiyawan Palace

King Rama V (King Mongkut) had the palace designed by an Italian architect and built near the beach in Tambon Haui Sai Nuea, Amphoe Cha-am. Then the area was abundant with wildlife especially deer, thus resulting in the name which means “Deer Garden”.

The palace consists of 3 important buildings:

    Samoson Sewakamat hall
The 2-storeed wooden rectangular hall was used for holding meetings, social functions and performances. The ground floor is a broad hall and the top floor is all encircled by a veranda.

    Samut Phiman Hall
This was the living department of Queen Indrasaksachi and the quarters of the inner court. There are stairways going down to the beach and the sea-front pavilions running parallel with part of Samut Phiman Hall.

    Phisan Sakhon Hall
This living quarters of the king consists of a bathroom, royal bed chamber and study room. The front of the building has a long walkway towards the beach and a pavilion for bathing suit changing.

Sadly, you are not now allowed to take pictures inside the building, but as I'm a farang, I didn't seem to understand...

    Wat Khao Ta Kieb Beach

We stayed at Wat Khao Ta Kieb Beach which is right next to the big golden Buddha, south of the town. This is the view from our bungalow complex.

    The big Buddha...

    Errr, a monkey

The view from up the hill looking at Hua Hin in the distance...

    And a gratuitous cloud picture...

    Mind your step!

    Pranburi

On Saturday we went out in the car to various places.

First of all we drove along the coast around Pranburi.

Is that an elbow, a knee, or a bend in your knob?

My elbow. Luckily my knob was in the shade of my shorts.

    Wat Khao Ga Lok

We happened upon a new Wat. It wasn't even finished properly and was a bit of a builder's yard outside.

Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park

The Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park is Thailand's first marine national park and was designated so in 1966. It has an area of 98.08 square kilometres straddling mountains that rise along a long coastline facing the Andaman Sea.

Khao Sam Roi Yot means a mountain with 300 peaks. There are various tales about the origin of its name. According to one, a Chinese argosy was hit by storm and sunk near the park. Only 300 on board survived. In Thai that is said as Sam Roi Rod. No one quite knows why, but some how over the years Sam Roi Rod came to be called Sam Roi Yot.

    Wat Khao Tao

Wat Khao Tao is near Dougal's gaff and is a few kms south of Hua Hin. We met up with Dougal on Friday evening at the Hua Hin Brewing Co Pub next to the Hilton Hotel. The lager is Marmite's recommendation.

Anyway, the area around there is rather nice and Mr Dougal is very fortunate to have a place there.

Jeez. No wonder you don't have a sun tan, you must have spent most of the weekend in the car.

I trust the drive back to Bangkok with the other Lemmings was not too fraught.

It was easy until we got to Bangkok, where we proceeded to get lost as usual. Thanks for your hospitality Dougal. Anytime time you're in Bangkok....

Sounds like a great tips MMTD and GOW. Thanks for the photos.

You need to wear sunblock - sweatproof - or sweatproof & waterproof if you are swimming. Use 500+

How in the heck did you legs get so burnt?

You must have been laying down or something.

    Anyway, cheers.

I don't go swimming at Hua Hin. Too many big fuck-off jellyfish. I was just walking along the beach.

It was my arm, not my leg (although they're a bit sore too).
