Why not by train? And enjoy the sleeping car?

Anyway, if you prefer not to be disturbed during the comfortable sleep in Thai Pullman, rather to drive with both hands on the steering wheel, I recommend:

Before reaching Phrae in Den Chai on the main road - not turn to the city: some 500 m straight after the traffic lights at the T junction (highway 11 off to Uttaradit and Bkk) make a U-turn and land at old Thai restaurant Suan Sai Thong with good BBQ and other Northern Food, having also a modern coffee shop in style.

Then, when in Phrae, ask (or google) for ancient teak house, if it's still open as museum.

Another hint: (however, I do not do it for free):
Few km before my previous hint, there is a T-junction to Si Satchanalai:

Before this junction on right you can see a sale exhibition of interesting teak root furniture etc.

And again one more (this time free, if you buy few pieces of the furniture - don't forget to mention me).

Before you reach this point, few km back, there is a place called Erawan (as many others in Thailand), it's announced with sideboard. This will bring you on left down the hill to a river with some attractions, not sure whether it is also at a weekday:

    And please drive carefully,,,
