Have been busy. Took out the bathtub and built in a nice modern shower. Found out that at age 69 I am not very fit and work proceeded very slowly. Also found out I needed additional work at every turn. Not nearly finished but we can take a shower, so a little more relaxed now.

We took the river tour on one of those big ships. Very touristy again.

Lots of muslims among the guests

A filipino band. My wife had to get on the stage and do some dancing herself. Quite a surprise after that. Back at our table two Muslim women approached her. The younger one told her that they are from Indonesia and her mother wanted to congrataulate her for her dancing. Weird. They shook hands with my wife and after brief hesitation with me too.

I'll just pretend this was intentionally.

The Grand Palace from the river

The buffet and food were not worth mentioning. No need to keep hungry though.

A braver man then I. Personally, lazy, old and retired, I buy the cheap Thai labor and let the wife supervise. Ahh yes, the retiree "don't have to do anything but sit in a chair and lovin' it" lifestyle, highly recommended to all.

I am not living in Thailand or the Philippines. A neighbour is having his bath completely renewed. Labour cost alone 11,000€, 378,000 baht, materials go extra. I am going with ~1200€ for quality materials.

Besides I have another reason to do such work. I am not afraid of cancer, I am afraid of alzheimer that my father had, not pleasant. Doing unusual manual tasks seems one way to get the brain going and regenerate. I need to live and have a working brain at least until I am 80, better more. That's because I want to see humans going to Mars and build a permanent settlement.

More pics coming in the next days.

Not sure if you remember Bobcock and Bustak, they had amazing photo threads full of portraits of locals.

Interesting to see this thread, cheers.

^ Lumphini is really cool at LK, Just thinking, it must have been 10 years and 2008 since I last went there for LK. How time flies.

Next the river taxi tour which I enjoyed more than the night cruise.

From the hotel we needed a ferry to transfer to the other bank where the river taxi station is located.

Some nice views on the banks, modern and old.

I wonder why those old houses have not been sold out and replaced. Should be prime real estate.

Long tail boats still the same as they were 40 years ago. A dangerous weapon. Just like 40 years ago I saw someone from another boat helping out with removing debris from the propeller.

Great Photos TO, thanks for the link back to the thread with the 70s photos. Mrs Toot was born in the earlyish 70s and ref the Klongs she insists that they were clean and she used to swim in them - i give a sceptical look - clean is relative - i just think where'd all the shit go. She doesn't seem worse for it, quite the opposite.

She used to come home from school and spent hours with her 4 siblings making bags from newspapers and bowls from coconut leaves for extra money. She also used to go to another family and prep garlic for salting - she always cheated the weights and the old man knew but used to give her food (Chinese as all the families were) and 1/2 baht with a wink - he knew what she was doing and she's always had a money head on her.
