If anyone is able to recommend a purveyor of fine pharmaceuticals in sin city I would be eternally grateful.

I know exactly where to go in Phuket and there is a lovely lady who always sells me anything I want.

But none of the APTEKA I go into in Patters are open for illicit business in prescription meds.

I did find a place in Patpong but it was a tad more pricey than Phuket.

One must watch the road rules in Pattaya.

    A Promenade round Pattaya-pc082986-jpg

I have this very evening been the victim of extortion at the hands of Thailand's finest constabulary.

Yes, for the first time since a copper scammed me in Guatemala (also for an alleged motorcycle license offence) around Christmas 1992 at the tender age of 24 I have been extorted!

I have been pulled over by the cops many times in Phuket and nary a worry. They ask to see your license and then wave you on.

This Pattaya copper did the same so I smilingly showed him my license upon which, to my shock and horror, he pulled out a laminated card and pointed to a picture of an international license and then point at my lovely pristine and only renewed last month and demerit-free shiny Australian license and wagged his finger and pointed to a 1000B fine symbol.

I was caught of guard and my first instinct at any legal entanglement is to wriggle out as fast as possible so I naively pulled out a 1000B note and tried to hand it to him.

But he said the massage ladies were watching and I had to do it more discreetly.

He kept my license and instructed me to return in 10 minutes and give me the money behind the card.

I wandered up the street and then remembered that the lovely massage lady with whom I had struck up a rapport the evening before during my Thai massage (no oil) was sitting outside her shop.

I related my tale of woe and she advised that 400B was the going rate. So I went back at the appointed time and put a folded 500B under the card and got my license back.

But this is a tad fucked because scooting around on the mocy is half the fun of being in Thailand so I do not want to be looking over my shoulder.

I went back to the massage shop after the scam to have my worries worked away by the lovely Lin and she said the police only take money Monday to Friday so this weekend will be OK. (is that true? sounds unlikely)

But what I want to know is 2 things

    1. what is the dealio with the license - I thought aussie license was the dogs balls and the full go
    2. what is the best way to deal with these scamming fookers if they are around tomorrow

    a. ignore them and drive past
    b. stop and take a photo of their laminated card to try and intimidate them into backing down
    c. bend over again

It is a shame as I have not been to Pattaya for 8 years and I am actually having more fun than I expected to. But being able to cruise round on the mocy with a carefree heart is essential so scams like this would make pattaya a non-started for me.

What do all the local farangs do to handle this problemio?

There are a lot of these musculaturely endowed fellas walking around.

    A Promenade round Pattaya-pc083005-jpg

Some of them look a bit sheepish though if you catch their eye. As if they are compensating for some psychological short-coming with their protein whey.

A pair of feet from Khon Kaen.

    A Promenade round Pattaya-pc082997-jpg

This skinny lass did not speak a word of English and was just 2 weeks off the bus from Khon Kaen. The tops of her feet were clean as a whistle but the soles of her feet were dirty as a tramp which gave me the massive horn for some reason!

Loops mate when they ask for 1000 start with 100. Have a red one wrapped round your naive aus non international license in future. Saves trouble.

Nope, you now need an IDP to ride around Pattaya. I'm surprised you were able to rent a bike without one, I thought they were going after the renters with big fines too.
Maybe thats just for those with no license whatsoever.

    They get Thai driving licences

Recently when they started to clamp down they initially wanted to charge up to 100,000 baht for no license, the same figure was used for smoking on Pattaya's beaches, I think that's 1,000 baht now too.

You were lucky to get away with just a 500 baht fine for no IDP, road blocks now need a police general there, they don't take bribes and will take your license and make you queue up at the local chock a block cop shop to get it back and pay your 1000 baht fine.Maybe do you for bribing a police officer too

They're a bunch of coonts those coppers now and you will also be fined 400 baht a time for any ladies of the night

A lot come to Thailand on steroid holidays. It's a hell of a lot cheaper in Thailand than places like Oz, apparently.
They also get that roid rage so be careful round them. One of your fellow Aussies was stamped to death earlier this year in a bar on that soi 6 you were in.

If you wanna ride around footloose and fancy free Loops, get out of Pattaya and head over to it's elephants graveyard- the darkside- where you'll be pretty safe cruising between bars tanked up with no license, helmet, shirt or lights .

Dilly, you should know it is getting even worse then Pattaya city with regard to Police road blocks on the Darkside these days.

And they are slowly working out all the back street short cuts as well the cheeky bastards.

The only benefit is you may be able to bribe your way out of the monkey house easier and cheaper then the bright-side.
