Am gonna go on thursday. Last time was there Halloween 2011. Here's one of the cops:
Opposite the gecko bar is the entrance to a temple with this monster spirit tree just inside the rear entrance.
Origami lamp shade stall.
Traditional Thai pharmacy, some interesting stuff in there.
Quick sugar rush needed and provided by the sugar cane juice seller.
If you mixed the juice with vodka you could give the vodka/redbull drink a serious run for it's money.
A few scooters about
Plenty of backpackers on the overnight bus to koh Samui for a few hundred baht at the end of the road.
Took this pic in the back of a tuk tuk on the way back from Wat Arun to the kho San, if only that mesh wasn't obscuring this ladies beautiful smile.
Disagree with that. I think its out of the way in a part of town that isolates you to that area with no public transport to speak of. No MRT and no BTS anywhere near there. I think this is a big reason why so many people who stay there wind up being the same people who say "I hate Bangkok and can't wait to get out of there fast enough" every time they come back. Its because their experience of Bangkok essentially boils down to KSR and the Grand Palace
Can't say I've ever been to Khao San Road. I found the area around MBK a good starting point for a Thailand newcomer. And, great place to be based out of when doing a lot of running around Bangkok.
^I've been there once, when I visited the Grand Palace some years ago. It was okay, but not my type. I liked Chatuchak Market more - enjoyed going around the stalls. Bought a couple of dresses and earrings - girly stuff. Both times I went to Bkk, I based myself near Asok. There's Terminal21 for food & shopping, the MRT and BTS, just a short ride to Siam Paragon. I liked Lumpini Park too - but I didn't run into Terry there. For sure, he didn't wear socks with sandals.
btw, thanks CCC for the pix

I landed on the Khao San Road first time back in 1987 and immediately loved the atmosphere. Back then it was a different animal and i returned every year as my base in Bangkok. I can still enjoy the area now for a few drinks and a giggle.
Regards Transport.
If ya walk 5 minutes to the river ya can jump the local boat and have a great trip down the river to connect with the BTS Skytrain at Saphan Taksin, from there ya can go anywhere in Bangkok. 15 baht fare or take the Tourist ferry for 40 Baht.
Or ya can jump a Tuk Tuk for 40 baht from Khao San and go to the Railway station and connect with the MRT and head off anywhere in Bangkok.
That's a ten minute Ride so if ya know the go the transport options are there.
The Khao San road is what ya make it but what I really like about it is the Back Packing scene, and the lack of mongering scum and scank bar girls. Very little trouble there as well. No wankers fighting over their bar girls.
Actually the Khao San these days is a mix of young people, older travelers, families and Thai people who come to watch the circus.
last time i was there was during the "black may" 1992 coup events
A few of the t-shirts on sale here.
Wasn't there a thread about Thai tapas in the kitchen forum?
why not..
One for the resident Italian Stallion..
Maybe not, more like..
Ive been there once. Its not my scene hanging out with stickin gap year uni students. Getting there and back to Soi Cowboy is a coonta too
Its one of those things you only wanna experience once in Thailand like the temples and putting your hand in a ladyboys panties
The two blondes would be appalled if you even tried to talk to them...unless of course your a fellow 21 year old backpacker
Must be you Gary, they are givin those straws a good suckin
Terry, do you know what these young backpackers think of you? Let me tell you. They despise you and everything they think you stand for. They will be appalled that you are an older man with a Thai woman. They will immediately write you of as the mongering scum that you hate. They will be infuriated that you have come into their area. As far as they are concerned your a sex tourist the lowest of the low..They are not the friendly travelers that you encountered back in 87. They are university gap year brats from middle class families who think everyone outside their social circle are scum. They will treat the Thais like animals on the rare occasion that they talk to them. That is the British section of course. The friendly Aussies and Americans might be more welcoming. If you look like an old hippy you will be met with curiosity but not outright hatred. If your not with a Thai woman they will think you are after a backpacker chic which will disgust them even more. Sorry mate but that's the reality of today's KSR
Changed a lot over the last 12 years when I first bought a beer there. Lights are brighter, smiles more superficial then ever... there's still a significant riptide. OK for the occasional drink and think, becoming fewer and further between though.
Is it still the same guy at the Burger KIng end who asks almost every farang (quite loudly) if they want weed? I remember him there for years. I wonder if any idiots ever took him up on this dubious offer
If you walk to the Grand Palace from the Khoa San then you'll pass a large tuk tuk car park and on the walls you'll see these provocative images....
Not the run of the mill provocative images one normally associates with Thailand
Funny ya say that because that's exactly the way i used to think when i was a young punk hangin on the Khao San.
Ya don't see many old farang fuks walking around with their Thai bints though, there is nothing there for them.
My self never takes my Handbag to the Khao San because it makes me feel bad knowing that the Nasty Backpackers are thinking I'm mongering white scum. ???
I'm quite delicate ya know.
I go on my own, all good then.
Jeez....last time I was at KSR was 4 years ago, and I took my wife. I didn't pick up on the nasty vibes described here. Perhaps some of them were like that, but not enough that someone would notice easily.
Nice ambience around the area with people from all walks of life and all ages chilling out and enjoying themselves..
^I could have easily blagged my way to sitting at their table, then getting drunk with 'em......
I did have a chicken breast in mushroom sauce at the Viengtai hotel in 2008 which was quite good. My cousin was with me.
A few days later was the day we walked away from Oh My Cod! without paying. For good reason, that's for sure.
Oh, just noticed that the hotel is called Ibis Viengtai. Original hotel gone. Is nothing sacred nowadays?

When I went there with my ex wife I felt like we were getting stared at constantly. It didn't help that although I was 45 at the time and she was 40 but looks much younger I'm about a foot taller than her so I knew that we were quite odd looking. Mind you I also felt we were getting stared at all the time when we visited Scotland and we walked around Tesco. Maybe I'm just paranoid and nobody was staring but deep down I knew they were.
ive also been to the KSR on my own and hear what they say about white mongering scum like my good self. I'm actually ashamed to say that I had a pleasant conversation with a Finish couple in a cafe and was to embarrassed to let me know I lived in Pattaya when they started on about this horrific city on the Eastern Seaboard that they had heard about. You shouldn't give a fuck what any stranger thinks about you but I personally can't help it.
