The Temple That Towers Above The Rest In Thailand - Wat Pha Sorn Kaew - Phetchabun!

Phetchabun - The home of Tamarind, funky tasty chicken and also.......

No dual pricing fee, No entrance fee, off the tourist beaten track and absolutely stunning!
If ever you visit Phetchabun then please visit this wonder of the world, it's fantastic.
Three weeks in Thailand and we only spent three hours there, i could quite happily live there for ever.
I carn't rave enough about this place which has to be my favourite place in Thailand.

The road up from Phetchabun rising 1200m, quite cool and a few mad for it cyclists on route..

BBQ egg kebab for brunch anyone?

Plenty of Lottery ticket sellers up here, fook it i'll buy one for 100baht. Who knows Rodders this time next year we could be Dillionaires

No drone zone, that's JP fooked

    The guardian of the north..

A few more random shots from around the temple, every inch was decorated..

    Great Stuff.

I've never been there, never even heard of it.

    Looked on Google.

    Deep, deep in Isaan

Check out the 70 baht note at the top of the money tree..

    The Tamarind selfie bench..

The view from the top, of the monastery below..

    Mosaic style everywhere..

The Changsters praying for a lottery win

    Hmm that looks interesting..

    Purple sweet potato, no charge..

Not bad at all, would have liked to have tried them roasted in goose fat.

Time for the main course around the back of the big white budhas and past the worker filling his bucket..

Only two items on the menu - Pork or chicken noodle soup!

I'll have both and so will the other 8 people in our party, total cost under 500 baht for the tastiest meal i've eaten in Thailand and the view....priceless!

Well, i hope you've enjoyed this thread as much as i did and still do.
If ever you are fortunate to get the opportunity to visit then you won't be disappointed.

More central Thailand than Isaan in my humble opinion.
There's not much info or pics about it on the interweb, had a look before i complied this thread.
Glad you enjoyed the pics, well worth a visit mate.

Neither Isan nor Central region, you heathens: Phetchabun is part of the North, Pak Neua.

Saw it a few years ago while they were still putting the finishing touches on it. Outside looks great, but the inside, when i was there, was pretty much empty. Was like a beautifully wrapped christmas present with nothing inside.

The tastiest food I've eaten in Thailand was also in Petchabun. I wonder what they do differently to the rest of Thailand.

    Beautiful temple and surrounding area!
    Thanks for the pics, Chitty!

When I hear Petchabun, I thought you had meant Petchaburi....originally.

@ccc - thnx for the pix & stories, very nice. Btw, was your wife (ex-wife?) included in this trip? I saw you mention the "missus" in your other thread, and there's a woman in your family pic. I thought you were in the process of divorce, or was there a reconciliation? Or a new gal?

(Okay, I will shut up now. Lol)

Probably so, for sake of argument.

Interestingly enough, a greater percentage of the good people of Phetchabun prefer everyday Isaan cuisine, while their dialect and speaking manner are very Sukhothai.

If you ever have a chance to get down to the Wat Phra Sorn Kaew area - take it. Quite worthy.

    Lovely thread, Chitty.
    Well done!!

I didn't see any bus up there.
    No organised tour groups.
    Off the beaten track.
My advice would be to drive up or if your feeling fit cycle.

Don't know about being off the tourist trail. Was absolutely swarming on my first visit ( a weekend ) so much so that we gave it up and went another day mid week. Even then was very busy. The selfie brigade were out in force all over the temple striking their poses.

Had one funny experience there though. As we left one of the buildings a group of monks were moving the shoe rack to widen the access. The oldest monk happened to pick up my rather nice new shoes and was obviously admiring them as I walked up.
' your shoes ' he asked as I walked up and gave him a fake dirty look.
' I'm watching you mate, I got my eyes on you ' I replied testily.

He thought that was real funny and we had a good laugh. He spoke good English having been to America for a while. Nice bloke. Good taste in shoes too.

Nice looking Temple. I'll put it on the wish list. Thanks for taking the time to post thhe pics.

The first time I ever had tamarind we were in Laos. One of the kids climed way up onto the tree and started shaking it to drop the fruit onto tarps that were placed under the limbs.I had it in one of my earlier threads but the pics are long gone. It's the one on the left in the avitar. It must be a pretty old tree as it's a big one. Now I have to buy them from the asian mart if I want a taste.Cheers, the fishes

I'm so conflicted now. Was considering late May, 2018 as it wouldn't be a terrible drive from Udorn.

    Thoughts?

Best time to visit would be towards the end of the rainy season. Mid-October into November.
By then, the mountain sides are gleaming and the crowds have thinned out.
