some of those airbnb apartments are located on sois where there arent motorbike taxis to get you to a main street so you could even get a taxi.

which is slightly annoying if you just want to step outside. so in that way, an apartment would be a bad idea, if you just want to pop in and out...food and others. so, to call a taxi to go get corner shop noodles might be really annoying if you're just wanting to not think about getting food before going back to the room.

better room versus convenience. i dont know. its a toss up @ 4 days.

we stayed in the airbnb place for like 10 days. for us, well worth it, given we had 2 kids with us and the 2 bedroom apartment had a living room...i think for 2500 a night. it had two pools too. that was way cheaper than anything a hotel could provide.

    Agree.

If your ceiling is 1,000 baht a night and you're staying more than two nights.

Also, 1,000 a night is, well, dillinger covered it earlier...

and i might be wrong (but not by much) but 1,000 per night is about as cheap as it gets. sure you can go lower, but those are hooker joints and really gross. (from what i've been told...)

at 1,000 per night...its not a bad thing to get into a lesser room, but just remember that you're there to crash and then just spend your time out on the town. sit in starbucks and find good chairs there. that kinda thing...but....while you're doing that kinda extended day out- you might actually be spending more money. just do the math- any place that really lets you sit and chill is usually not a local thai kinda haunt. so an extra thousand for a room, although possibly stretching the budget, might end up saving you after a few days.

i can only speak from my experience, but coming from the east coast of the states, that long ass flight wears me the fuck out. so when i get to bkk, i really like to chill out and go at my own pace. given that the food will be new on your stomach, having a nice place to sit around and make frequent stops in the bathroom is what ive found to be useful.

everyone is different, but these days, my holidays are as laid back as possible. that doesnt mean just recoiling in a room, but the notion of staying out all day as to avoid a lousy hotel room, just doesnt seem worth it, especially given how expensive the flight is. throw in a hundred more dollars, and you can get a great view of the city from up on the 20th floor or thereabouts, making your evening's return to the room most enjoyable...and in turn, easily saving you the money you'd be spending in some pretentiously twatty hipster eco-bar, or whatever the fuck they're called. twatty fucks. ice bars. or jazz club that plays sek loso covers. whatever. just give me a great view, relaxation, and a working fridge. get carry out food, and bam- there's your evening.

but who knows but you matt...you may get off the plane and feel awake as heck at 9pm thai time. you banter about the town and then just want to sleep from 4am-2pm...thereby making any hotel room, worth it. so long as the door of the hotel room locks and the water's hot, who cares?

Matt, give a thought to the Malaysia Hotel.
Good location. Nothing fancy and in the old back-packer haunt of yesteryear. I lived around there in a GH for over a year in the early 90's and even then there were very few back-packers to be seen.

Has it deteriorated then? The cheapest rate I ever managed there, with discount, for a deluxe room was around 1,800 and that was 14 years ago. Walk-in rate in busy periods were 2,200 and by 2006 that went up to 3,000 baht.

Presumably they haven't maintained things and it's a shithole?

Come to think of it, many moons ago near that same intersection but across the main drag and down past MC-sleaze a bit - where Arab-town starts slacking and street walkers stare from dark corners as if you already owe them something...(maybe between 7 & 9)

...we were tucked into some street grub (a very weak attempt at 'jim joom') when a couple appeared in a window opposite and started getting it on and getting it on WELL.

They were only shadows and seemed to have turned the interior lights on extra bright and were putting on a show for the whole street through a translucent window shade.
It was very obviously a farnag and a Thai. Standard positions were each given their day in court, along with a couple of Kama Sutra-like surprises. It went on for at least 10 minutes.

The entire section of Suk was frozen (aghast at moments and almost embarrassed at others), but generally we were all silently willing and cheering them on to finish, so we could go back to whatever shenanigans of our own we had on our plates.

Nice price indeed, but to be honest I'd rather not stay right across the road from NANA hotel. No judgement, just not into the atmosphere there (anymore).

Yep, I realize that. I'm trying to save money, that's all. So I'm digging away, searching for a place that saves me that money while we run around town doing things. It's just gotta be nice enough to enjoy our time there and be comfy and interesting. We're actually planning to spend a night away at a beachside place during out week+ at the family home down south for Songkran.

Love the suggestions, keep 'em coming if you gots 'em.

Agree wholeheartedly. Good room, nice aircon and a great shower are all the trimmings that make being away from home worthwhile.

The cynical side of me says that its just me aging - which might have more than a kernel of truth.

I quite like Hopeland and usually go for one of their one bedroom appts which are fully equipped even down to a washing machine.

    Usually 2 K a night there.

imo matt, there's nothing wrong with places that are 1k a night. its just that you're going to sacrifice either: comfy or interesting. or both.

if saving money on a trip is important (it is) then don't even sweat the hotel room and worry about the trip. spend your money doing things and just consider the hotel for the basic function of sleeping. there are plenty of places near BTS stops that are 1k a night.

there aren't any diamonds in the rough imo and most places these days are pretty uniform in price. the only places that are both comfy and interesting start at 2.5k, and at 3k+ the choices are vast. for 1k you get what you get: a convenient place that's affordable. there's nothing wrong with that. personally, i wouldnt waste time trying to find a place that looks good on computer, but you get there and it's musty and dingy and such.

just show up and look at rooms near the BTS. you will definietly find something and added bonus that you can see the room for yourself. that's huge.
