Excellent pics, Mike - I see you've captured a few namesakes (nap)

It doesn't take much to make others happy, just the first step that too many don't make - well done on putting a smile on the kids' faces

One of the family cousins is working in Mae Sot and organized a trip over the boarder for us. It was handy for me due to my tourist visa not making it to the end of our trip. The trip was a bit of a world wind but we got a bit of a look around . Most importantly the family got to visit a few temples.

I don't think this dog has seen to many westerners

It was late afternoon by the time we got over there. Everyone was looking for a bit of shade.

    Men and dogs

We got some nice melons outside our first stop.

Selling trinkets outside the temple. Guy looks like a real "character".

This mural was in a temple. I don't read Burmese but would have to guess the farang is up to no good here.

Cool old guy relaxing in the shade. Those cigarettes probably knock a few years off.

Took this up on a huge tower in a temple. Nice view of the area.

One more in the other direction.

I can never get a good picture of one of these balancing ladies.

Looks like i got caught by the lady on the left. I'm always a bit shy taking peoples picture and try to sneak it.

That was about it from Mae Sot. Not much of an adventure but at least i got my visa sorted.

Looks like a lovely area of Thailand to retire to. Why do all the local 'bar flies' here persist in telling me "No farang can live anywhere in the country and that i would go crazy" Well i am just about ready to have a look for myself. I guess we are not all the same.

I love messing around in small boats myself; but have always had a problem in Thailand, Laos & Cambodia. The locals can't understand why you'd want to go in a small boat cruising on a river; when you can rent a big boat, load it up with the extended family, hangers on, $100 of food & booze; go out and anchor in the river 100m from the dock & have a party where you can impress your fellow villagers with how rich you are having a wasteful party near your home village. You gain immense face by doing so.
Me: No Teerack, I want to go for a quiet cruise with a 6 pack of cold Heineken's & just look at the jungle & rice paddies as they slip by. maybe stop at a village & have some fresh water crayfish c/e Thai sticky rice.
Thai GF: What? That is crazy & dangerous Teerack. I will call my kou-zin the policeman; he will arrange a party boat for you and the 20 extended family. Party, Party. Only $300.
Me resigned: Forget it Teerak, I'm going golfing. (WTF is with these goofy Thai's?)

Dave it's the best move I ever made
    1300b flight from bkk and a 1 hour ride/drive from a city
I love sitting on my porch with a few beers the kids playing happily watching the world pass slowly by.
I've lived my.whole life in a rat race in a city centre it's how you deal with your own company.
Give me a book and a comfy chair I'm happy.
People think that you live.in the country you are isolated I still have internet, a car a motorcycle a bank account it just takes a little longer to get to a cinema or theatre , or ferang bar than it normally would.
They think we live in the middle ages

To be honest I have never spent more than a week up in the village at one time. I feel as I get older and have spent more time in Thailand That I enjoy different things about it. I think I could be happy living in Ban Tak if I know that when it gets to boring or I need a change no problem just go down to our place in Pattaya. But I'm not so sure that I could live in ether location full time. This year I thought did I really fly half way around the world to hang out in a place full of westerners. Not really sure what to do now.

I feel exactly the same way, I have children there so it's different
I think I will probably work in the UK for the summer and live in Thailand in the winter that seams a solution for me.
I would hate to be stuck in a village under financial constraints that would be awfull I want the best of both worlds, I go to pattaya alot and stay at the royal cliff resort for about £60 a night, I sold my Condo and like to treat pattaya as a holiday place to take in shows, booze a little and take the kids to the zoo beach etc.
I find it more enjoyable now I don't have a home there, not sure why

My wife has wanted to go to the Hua Hin area for years but I always resisted thinking it would be to similar to Pattaya to justify driving there. Well I finally gave in and we set off with sister and mother in law for Pran Buri. The whole trip was nearly ruined when the navigation on my Iphone took us into the middle of Bangkok. I am not sure why that happens but it's gotten me before. After a brief stop at the other sisters place near the end of silom rd. we regrouped and headed off again. This time with Google maps.

My wife booked us in a really great little hotel on the ocean. It was quite hard to find though.

Here are a few pictures from our balcony.

    Really nice and clean area.

Our cousin tagged along also. Didn't know what to make of these kite surfers.

Of course i was wrong about Hua Hin but really liked Pran Buri so nice and quiet.

There were some super houses on the beach this was one.

I saw some real interesting shells there. (it really was pretty clean otherwise)

I could definitely get used to waking up to a view like this.

We've stayed in Hau Hin the past couple off visits to Thailand.

First time at a friends villa near the airport and second time at the Blue Wave a bit further along the coast.

Love the place, food, locals, ambiance, all good.

Will try and dig out some off my old pics

I took this one at night it was very clear out and these fishing boats lights were bobbing up and down on the horizon.

We stopped by for a look at the mangrove restoration project. It was pretty cool but nothing like the one on Koh Chang the one there was much older and worth a look.

Here is a view of the garden and the room we had was on the top with a nice big balcony.

They did a nice breakfast that was included in the room rate. Western and Thai options.

Hotel cat coming in for a scrap.

The location of this place was pretty remote. I was surprised how rural it was still. I took a picture looking up and down the road so in 10 or 20 years I can say to myself I remember when it was all open land around here. (if I'm still alive)

    up

    down

    And across the street

They had just done this curb the night before and sure enough this was the next morning. You don't see to much cement in Thailand void of either dog tracks, human or motorcycle tracks.

Here are a few from our last morning on the beach.

I was surprised to see this in the water at low tide. That would ruin your swim in a hurry. I found out the mountain down the beach was covered with these cactus.

Lots of these crabs around this was a big one.

    beach patrol dogs

Fishermen at sun rise our last day. I will definitely be coming back here we really loved how quiet it was and great swimming too.

After trying for years I finally got my wife to agree to taking the train to Chiang Mai from Bangkok. I had suggested it in the past but never really worked out. We got our tickets when we where in Hua Hin visiting the train station there. We wanted our own room on the train so had to book it a week out. Tickets were only 1,900 baht each. After seeing what the 875 baht tickets area was like I'm glad I did it probably would never gotten my wife back on a train again.

We started out at the bus station in Pattaya. I was surprised to see a farang monk. I would have thought if you want to be a monk so bad you would leave you phone behind.

I love to walk around this old station. plenty of action going on. That is our train on the right.

About an hour after the train left a guy came in to make up our beds. Some how we ended up with two rooms joined be a door. So we had plenty of room.

Its a shame this train only runs at night. This was really the only descent picture I got on the train. Just outside of a very long tunnel.

Here is a picture i got walking around the train of the 875 baht seats. I would have been fine with it but I know the wife would not be to happy.

Last train pic is the "dinning car". It would have been alot more fun if it wasn't so dam cold. Definitely worth the experience.

When we arrived it was raining and very cold. I was feeling like I was back in my home town in the U.S.

    It just looked cold out

I have never seen so many Chinese people in Chiang Mai. Don't these pigeons carry disease? one can hope. They seemed to enjoy having those birds land on them.

All the dogs were bundled up too.

If dogs could talk I think this one was embarrassed.

I saw this old lady in a market and couldn't figure out how she got in there to here stall.

Speaking of punk rockers this old guy had quite the hair cut. All shaved but the bottom part.

These dragons looked scarier than most. I think because the eyes.

I saw this in a bathroom and got all of them except the bottom right. I think it was a joke but if not there are some dirty F'ers around when you need this type of sign.

cozy cat in a temple trying to stay warm.

My wife read somewhere online about the Chiang Mai "grand canyon" so we went out for a look. It was an abandoned quarry maybe for clay or something. It was ok luckily not far out of town. I looked online after and there are some much bigger ones around that look pretty cool. Here are a few pics

After leaving the "grand canyon" we headed to U-mong temple. A really old temple complex with a series of tunnels running under a big brick area. Pretty cool and an amazing amount of bricks.

This one shows the stupa on top. The sun finally came out.

    Inside the tunnels

It must be nice and cool in there during hot season.

This was a view on top. The amount of brick used is hard to believe.
