Thread: Hell Fire Pass, Kanchanburi, July 2015

Early last month the Hand Bag and I completed a nice little road trip. The aim was Kanchanaburi, Sangkhlaburi and to visit the Museum and cutting at " Hell Fire Pass ".

I have been to Kanchanaburi quite a few times but never made it up to the Pass, usually due to lack of wheels and not liking package tours. Anyway off we go.

Take a walk around the grounds.

Really nice environment. The Museum and grounds are funded by the Australian Government.

In we went to the museum for a look see. A lot of history in here and a must see. A nice viewing platform at the back.

After viewing the Museum we hit the trail down to the cutting.

Follow that Board Walk, some huge stands of Bamboo around.

Great pictures Tezza that don't really present the horror and violence that went on there.

I lost 2 uncles at that location but took my old man there so he could pay his respects.

Carry on through the Bamboo and onto the rail bed.

Probably too late now. But you can arrange to walk about 5-6 km of the death railway finishing at th cutting.

I've reached the rail bed after entering through the Bamboo Forrest. A real nice entry from the museum, getting back up at the other end is a different game.

I'm standing at the bottom of the stairs looking back towards Kanchanaburi. You can see how they carved out the side of the mountain to lay the rail bed. Mostly done by hand.

I'm now looking towards the Cutting at the bottom of the stairs.

Keep walking across the little bridge.

The broken rock on the path is what has been carved out of the side of the mountain.

This pic shows the gradient the prisoners had to deal with.

Approaching the Cutting there are still a few sleepers left.

This is the beginning of Hell Fire Pass. A solid wall of rock the prisoners had to cut through.

This is the entrance to the cutting. We were lucky, we virtually had it to ourselves and this really made a big difference. To view it surrounded by a tour bus full of Muppets would detract from the importance and significance of this piece of history.

At the entrance to the Cutting one starts to see tributes left for the Prisoners of War.
