It was really quiet, I noticed a few Russians but they haven't taken over yet IMO. I don't think it'll be long though unfortunately

Nice Pics..I remember my first trip to Samet in the 80s..cold water showers and a loud generator for electricity from 19h to 23.00h for the fan...at the Malibu... mid 80s they even got air condition in some bungalows...

Good pics Satonic. I had fun there last year. Some nice little beaches hidden away off that dirt track there. A good island to take a scrambler or piss about on an atv

Yeah it is fun, my friend let me use his scooter with dirt tires so we rode around most of the island. I was surprised to see that the main road that runs across the island is now a real road! It was a dirt track last time I was there.

I remember it as a dirt track through the jungle back in the 80s, slippery as hell when wet ..I and a friend went to Samet on 2 MTX rented in Pattaya..got the bikes handloaded on a boat in Ban Phe and at the time it looked that we were the only farang with bikes on the Island..a Park Ranger stopped us one day and wondered how we got the bikes on the Island, told us it was not allowed, but for 50 Baht we could drive on..oh well...
Staying at the Maliby resort was fine..just got boring in the evening so we headed for Na Dan / Na thorn ? in the evening..as there was 2 beer bars located...what a ride on that dirt track..pitch dark..downhill, slippery, muddy and in my headlight I see this moving tree branch in front..well keep rideng..my friend told me it was a 2 meter Python that I ran over..well I did not turn back to check
Another part of the track went over a small stream..here a small stilt brigde was build with boards that fitted the wheels of a car..so 25-30 meters...tongue straight in mouth..a real balance act..oh well old memories

    Sounds like fun

I might take my own bike over next time. The resort I stayed in this time had their own boat so we used a different pier but apparently at the main pier it's 250b per way for a bike and no issue with the park rangers. They also said I could take my car over for 5 or 6000 I can't quite remember as there is no way I'd consider that. I leave the truck on the mainland, covered with security for 50 baht a day.

A very different looking place to the one I visited in 2004. Had to smile over the comments about the road ( track ) that ran though the island. Treacherous if it rained even on low powered bikes. I remember it being quite busy at that time, plenty of weekend holidaying Thais then. Seems there's been a lot of development since.

It is my understanding that most of Koh Samet is actually a National Park ... so must of the infrastructure is technically illegal. That is why the main road is left in it's deplorable condition. The Parks Dept probably takes routine bribes to ignore the rampant development. Spent 3 days there in Sept 2011. Lotsa mosquitoes during the "rainy" season. Koh Samet is noted as the "sunniest' place in all of Thailand ... so it is a great place to chill out during the Thai Wet Season of June-Sept.
