Beach isn't great. The whores are hideous. The hotels are overpriced. IMO probably a better place to live than visit. I still like HH once in awhile. At least you can walk down the sidewalks w/out having to dodge schlock mongers, cars, & motos. Great seafood joints. The golf is top notch too.

Just spent three days in Hua Hin and there really isn't anything nice to say for it, in terms of tourism.
We're now at the Methavalai hotel in Cha Am and it is much better . . . but still nothing compared to the nicer beaches in Malaysia and other SEAsian countries.

The beach here is relatively clean - well, it was while empty but now with the long week-end holiday - but really nothing special at all . . . it certainly pales in comparison to the lovely beaches we enjoyed in and around Ao Nang in March/April.

Thailand is becoming less and less attractive for this type of vacation

Glad you have your priorities right.
You (and some others) seem to miss the main point. It isn't the beer, or the fact they can't produce a draft Heineken or Stella - like Bangkok - that's just a symptom. The underlying problem is that Hua Hin, aside from some of its famous residents, is absolutely nothing special. Its beach is nothing special (aside from the horses and their shit, the sandy shit-filled water, and the jelly fish and their threats). So it is not worth the extra couple of hours to get there from Bangkok, IMO. While it may be quieter than Pattaya, Jomtien or Phuket, the same can be said for Rayong, Khon Kaen and Korat - and I don't want to take a weekend break there either.
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!

    Why stop there ?
What about Roi Et or Buriram ?

You've had a shit hol Tom, but it was no fault of the location.

Are you serious when saying it's not worth getting out of the dense polluted haze that is bangkok ?

No Dillinger. I've been there (Hua Hin) many times over the years, and it just never improves. It lives off its special residents' reputation and little else. Do you have a special interest in HH? Why be so protective of it?

If you're in Bangkok and want a break, by the time you've driven 2 and half hours to HH, you may as well continue for another bit (from 30 mins to a few hours) and fine a nice coastal resort - always meant to spend a few days driving down and having a look around. HH is distinctly average, poor beach, etc, in town. Some nice restaurants in town.

I'm less than 2 hours from Cha-am, but have only been once. It's ok, cheap and pleasant enough during the week, but there's no beach or almost anything else to speak of. It's pleasant like a day trip to Canvey Island could be pleasant. Having already been to HH 2 or 3 times over the years, I wouldn't bother to drive down there, offers very little for the extra 40 minute drive; other than a few nice restaurants.

Having said that, if you know Chaam/HH well, then there are probably some nice places, resorts, etc, out of town; far less touristy places, better beaches, etc, but you'd need a car.

It does have a nice train station, but 5 hours third class travel to get back to Bkk isn't my favourite... I'd rather get a train for 3 hours to Kanchanaburi, nicer place than HH, imho, different type of place though. Pop to Kanchanaburi net time, Tom; get the train from Thonburi station, quite pleasant....

Don't get me wrong, I'm not proclaiming it to be paradise there,
I also ventured to that beach near the Hilton, I thought it was quite scenic as a whole, with those boulders as eye candy. I found the Thai beach vendors more of a pain than the horses though, with their constant telling you to "sit down sir" at every deck chair you walk past.
I also got ripped off for a thousand baht for a meal for the missus and a couple of beers at one where the plastic foldflat sunbeds are free, but you have to buy food.

Ive done Ao Nang, Samet, Pattaya , Hua Hin, Penang, Langkawi, in the last couple of years and as a whole Hua Hin would sit comfortably in the top 2 of those destinations IMO

The parade of eateries on the seafront are fantastic. Delicious tucker at nice prices. I wasn't that taken with the rest of the place, apart from the bookshop run by the Ozzie gent.

Thanks BB will try Kanchanaburi at some point, but not really into river rafting. I've been to all the rest except Koh Samet. Planning that for later this year. So far I'd say Koh Chang is my favorite. Anyone else get the feeling Koh Chang presently feels like Phuket 20 years ago? In Phuket there are still ok places like Kamala Beach and something Singh beach nearby steep hike down and up again but worth it. Oh yes nearly forgot Krabi, it's in my top 3. I hope they keep it as is. However finding draft beer was a problem there too even in high season

    Laem Singh Beach.

Koh Chang like Phuket 20 years ago?
That definitely depends on the which beach one chooses.
White Sand Beach these days feels exactly like Phuket, it was however quite lovely 17 years ago when I ended up there staying for 3 months.

But the beaches further to the south on the island are still quite nice and the eastern side of the island is virtually without any tourists whatsoever. The beaches are nothing to write home about though.

I just take the 30ThB ferry from Pattaya Pier to Tawan Beach on Koh Lam, when I'm on my annual golf trip to Pattaya. Very few Thai's go to the small quiet Beach to right 2 end of Tawan Pier. Most Thai's go left to the monster disco throbbing, bbqing Thai Beach. I always have some decent snorkelling, cool beers & good seafood salat. Some gorgeous young Russian Bikini clad babes there.

I'll stay where I am as long as it is a shithole, and leave when it becomes yet another stupid "family-friendly" destination...

Going to the beach is damn boring anyway, so all the beaches of Asia could be littered with radioactive waste, it's not like I care

    ^ valuable and constructive input, thanks . . .

A saving grace - about half an hour further south of Hua Hin, on a promontory, is a 'fishing village' where the crab is plentiful and relatively cheap at 350/kg . . . drove there yesterday - added to which it makes a nice change from the usual Thai fare which none us are that fond of.

So far quite lucky in reference to weather - two late showers in the last ten days - not bad for monsoon times
