Sai Yok Waterfall, Kanchanaburi. Weekend Tourist Train.

Every Sat and Sun there is a Tourist Train that goes from Hualampong Bangkok, to Nam Tok Sai Yok Yai waterfall in Kanchanburi. Along the the Death Railway, and over the infamous bridge.

4 of us decided to make a day of it so booked four seats, thinking they'd be nice and relaxing with a table between them to relax for the day and watch the lovely jungle countryside go by.

Unfortunately as it's entirely aimed at Thai tourists, the seats are tiny plastic ones, no table, and no way to even stretch your legs out.

    See:

The real Bridge on the River Kwai | Train from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi & River Kwae

    Only 120b each.

06.30 depart Bangkok Hualamphong station, Saturdays & Sundays only.
07:40 arrive Nakon Pathom, 40 minute stop to visit the great Chedi (cone-shaped temple).
09.26 arrive Kanchanaburi, very short stop.
09.35 arrive River Kwai Bridge station & stop for 25 minutes.
10.00 depart River Kwai Bridge station, cross the Bridge & head along the River Kwae via the impressive Wampo Viaduct.
    11.30 arrive Nam Tok station.
11:30 arrive Nam Tok Sai Yok Noi. This is the only train to run beyond Nam Tok to the end of the operational line. Time to see the scenic waterfall.
14:20 leave Nam Tok Sai Yok Noi.
14.25 leave Nam Tok station heading back south.
15.53 arrive at Kanchanaburi station and stop for 60 minutes for a visit to the war graves.
    16.53 leave Kanchanaburi.
19.30 arrive back in Bangkok Hualamphong station.
Get some touristy picks of the bridge and the station.

    busy train full of Thais.

Pass some nice resorts and houseboat places.

    Bring your togs.

There's a couple of different levels, as you can see there was a few tourist buses, mainly full of Russians there, but luckily they buggered off a few minutes later.

    Looks like an asshole.

    Smells like an asshole.

    when's the next photo comp?

Some nicely built wooden restaurants with balconys going over parts of the water/jungle, with your normal Thai food.

It's a real pity that they don't market it for Westerners, and put on a decent carriage with leg room and proper seats and tables, even one of the dining carriages off another train.

Anyway, a good day out. The stop in Nakon Pathom was nice as well.

It got a bit long on the way back though, cramped up in a little carriage built for Asians, without so much as a table or any sort of room for you.

Perhaps drive up. As the waterfall and countryside are nice.

Is there a direct train to Kanchanaburi from Hualamphong then? I got the train to Kan before but got it from Thonburi as I thought they didn't go from Hualamphong.

I live in a Nakorn Pathom town called Sampran so have been to Kanchanaburi several times but never on an ANZAC day. I believe that Australian ex POW's use to attend a wonderful ceremony on ANZAC day. Does anyone know if anything like that happens now or are they all too old to travel?

Ok, just to note, that besides the "tourist train", there is a regularly scheduled service on weekdays as well. Only difference is that it does not have the long stops at nakhorn pathom and elsewhere. Basically two trains a day each way, first early morning, second just afternoon (departing nonthaburi).

    Free for thais.

I did that tourist train service years ago - it wasn't really crowded at all and I'm a dwarf, so no problems with the seating.

How much did the return train ticket cost? I seem to recall that it was extremely cheap and great value for money

Thonburi, surely; just by Sirirat? Free for Thais; 100 baht for foreigners, and they don't accept a Thai driving licence or anything else - it's 100 baht...

I've done that train trip quite a few times. Shithouse in the hot season and one cant wait to get off the bugger.

Why the tossers don't run a proper A/C train is beyond me, theres certainly a market with Farang paying premium prices.

This is only the special weekend tourist train. For the normal daily one see:

There's a few great threads on here about it. I think 'MeMock' did a good one about 4 years ago. I'd take a look and check it out.

Completely agree. There should be a premium carriage with proper seats and tables, even put the price up to 500b for this premium carriage, make it nice and fancy and have it marketed by TAT.

I believe you are right - I caught it further up the line, so was not paying that much attention to the origin.

Nice thread CM. I've driven past Sai Yoke several times and stopped for lunch opposite.

As you say ....... plenty of Ruskis every time I've been. Probably because it is so near the main road and there is no entrance fee . Always pretty busy compared to other falls along that route where you have to pay to enter a national park to gain access.

Yes, done that too. State sponsored racism and double-pricing ...

It's amazing one would ride it that often with all that discomfort when it is quicker in a air con vehicle.
What I didn't like was the one hour stop to wait for a train coming the other way. For train lovers it is a must do. Amazingly only a few hours out of Bangkok.

I have a friend who was visiting Bangkok and did not know that. If he had he would have gone there he had a uncle who died working on it. The cemataries are very beautiful and well kept up. When we were there we saw a crew of 5 Thais cleaning the gravestones and putting a preserver them. One of the cemeteries had a brief history and I was surprised when the author said that once the rail road was done the conditions got better because the Japanese took over the project from the Koreans.
