    Wedding Procession - abbreviated

Dec 9, Monday AM about 9 I hear noise approaching – a most rare occurrence in our Moo Baan. Just an FYI, our Moo Baan is a pricy gated community. Access limited, pass through two manned guard gates plus roving guards on foot, bicycle and electric cart. It is, in a word quiet. In the past couple of years I’ve only heard music from two parties and both were distant.

So, noise draws attention and I joined my neighbors to see what was going on. A wedding procession. Two Soi’s down is the “new” sections completed houses for sale. They’re a bit pricy by Thai standards 5-7 million Baht without kitchens, appliances, AC, water tanks or pumps. So, really add another million to the “for sale” price.

Well, seems a couple of newlyweds are moving in. New marriage, new house, new life. I wish them well. As I was not an invitee to the celebration, I took a few snapshots that I’ll share on here as an investigative “test” upload.

As per an earlier photo thread and pix not being displayed, I’m upload these pix using my MacPro laptop with a Chrome browser vice the usual Mac safari browser.

Let me know if you can see them. Thanks.

Three posts of five pix each.

I can see the pics fine, thanks.

Whenever I see this sort of thing in Thailand I just can't help wondering if anyone has jobs? Imagine in the west expecting a load of people to come and welcome you into a new home... on a Monday. You'd have to say, "sorry, I'll be at work".

I've lost count of the number of times my wife has been to a three day funeral, a monk's ceremony, 100 day ceremony, etc etc in the middle of the week. How can they do it?

    Large houses.
    Small plots.
    No gardens.
    Too close together.
    "Gated communities".
Sorry, left all that shit in the West dude.
After living in the West in cities and towns with no land space, living out here in Nakon Nowhere surrounded by my own acres is a revelation.
Not only a breath of fresh air and space and freedom, a feeling i would never want to lose moving back to a rabbit hutch in the West.
Or a Moo Ban in a city here.
Each to their own, i mean no ill will and wish you all the best.
    Kind regards,
    TG x

Yea, but apparently earning money is second priority to sanuk. On a more realistic note - as per the "boss" family and family obligations come first. They'll even shut down the store for a celebration. Different lifestyle, different way of living.

Frustrated the hell out of me when I worked here. Obligations, timelines and deadlines were/are met with a "so what" attitude. Very difficult to keep a Thai staff and production schedules balanced. If it doesn't get done today there's always next week, or month.

But, if their defense - you do get what you pay for and the great sums of cash they are paid, well... That being said, we did pay well above average to hold onto top quality help, it did show up in our bottom line and was not positive. We did absorb the deficit although we did have to answer for our generosity.

They, the Thai's, do things "differently"

Yup, quite agree. As Fish said in another thread, just trying to “bring the train wreck back on track” Picture threads are certainly more entertaining than the repetitive cesspool shit fights TD has devolved into.

Yup, certainly I’m as much a “geezer” in your eyes as you are a “youngster” in mine.

Now, in an attempt to address your attempt to troll this thread – when you live in a foreign country all eyes are on you. Whether you like it or not, you are being watched, by the good and the bad. Whether you believe it or not – you are as a foreigner living in a foreign country a “wealthy” individual – again, whether you believe it or not. Now, the downside of this is you are a target for opportunists, and, yes, your domicile is considered a “peach” property for a burglary.

My “crib” is loaded, fine house, fine appliances, entertainment equipment, furnishings, foods, liquors, etc. Yea, I’m “cashed up” and living the life. My wife and I also like to vacation, leaving our “belongings” ripe for a raid.

So, to protect our goods, we live in an exclusive large house, on a large lot, in a gated community, with fine (and rich) neighbors, and many layers of security to protect our “belongings”. To the extent that even the “professionals” would think twice or thrice before attempting a robbery.

The Way It Has To Be.

And, I to believe in the "Each to their own, i mean no ill will and wish you all the best" statement.

As far as “living out here in Nakon Nowhere surrounded by your own acres”, well, uhm… how do you protect your belongings? Or, are you a slave to protecting your own acres? or, perhaps, you live a minimalist lifestyle and have nothing that even the seedier side of the Thai “ne’er do wells” would consider worth stealing?

Anyway, I started the thread and I’ve certainly helped to derail it by taking it off on a tangent. The subject probably deserves a thread of its own in a different sub-forum. Mods please modify and move as you see fit. Now, if this subject is of interest to fellow TDer’s please feel free to comment.

Consider a recent thread concerning Thai nationals and legal possession of firearms for protection there is some concern for safety of our families from the criminal element.

Do you feel “targeted” as a foreigner?
Do you live in a “safe” area?
What do you do to protect yourself in Thailand?
How do you protect your family?

I would just like to say that in my opinion thaiguzzi wasn't trolling your thread he was just expressing his opinion, maybe he could have used more friendly words but never the less he was just saying he wouldn't want to live in such a close environment anymore. It makes good sense for you to do so as it provides you with the level of security that makes you happy.

As someone who lives out in the country I to couldn't live in what i would consider a confined space. As for security it never really crosses my mind as possessions are just that and if someone wants to steal anything they have to get past the Missus's security system first. She has the place fenced, the house 'block" is 2 rai, we have 5 dogs, she has cctv, she keeps lights on at night and as a last line has a gun. In over 10 years we have lived in this house we have never had any issues.

I love my space and the total of our land around our house is a little over 15 rai so plenty of room to move. I have a garden area under shade cloth that is over 500 sqm.

So for your chosen lifestyle what you have is good for you but one size does not fit all.

Just as some constructive input Bowie, the above sentence to start the thread could be viewed as being a bit pompous. Personally I couldn't live in a gated community but whatever works for each person. Like TG and Ootai, I love the open Mooban and land and do not need guards, gates, HOA and the rules.

My best mate in Korat has just bought a house on a brand new Supalai development up the road from me. A nice modern house, security, gated community, but a tiny strip of garden around the building.

We built a house 12 years ago on land set aside for residential use. At first there was loads of open space but that is gradually reducing as more plots are sold and more houses built. It works for the time being, but I would rather have more space. The complete lack of town planning is also a concern - several small warehouses have been built on the 'residential' land and the latest trend seems to be for building apartment blocks.

The current view from my office window...

For the time being we're restricted where we live by my daughter's schooling, but once free of that I would like to move and build a small house on big land in the middle of no-where. I'm quite happy not to see people from one day to the next. Security is not a concern for me - we have nothing worth stealing. The only time we were burgled was when there was 50,000 Baht in cash in the house, ready to pay a builder the next day. Obviously an inside job.

Must admit though, when I visit my mate on the Supalai estate I'm quite envious of his modern house, compared to ours that is gradually falling down around us (a combination of poor design and poor build quality!). The daughter of course loves the visits to Supalai - she's off on her bike or scooter playing with the other kids on the street. That's the great thing about gated communities and reminds me of my childhood... morning through to night out with the other kids.

Well, the thread started as a test platform concerning missing or none display of photographs. Test criteria comparative of safari vs. chrome browsers uploaded to TD.

Original descriptive of Moo Baan was added because it is unusual (in my experiences) to see a brass band leading a procession - yup, expensive add on. But, the Moo Baan is a "rich" Moo Baan and I am the only resident falang.

Specific to myself - I bring the money - the wife picks the location. Supposed to be by vote - only in my dreams. We did recognizance North-South and East-West. My preferred location was Korat, even had an active VFW Post, fine house in gated Moo Baan and teaching assignments at a local university - all my bases covered - vetoed by wife - too far away from her family in Bangkok.

But, she says we will not live in Bangkok, we will not live in a Condo, we will not... basically my hands were tied.

But - the target on my back and yours falang in living in Thailand means "security" is of upmost importance. You/we/I are targets of opportunity. Protect yourself and your belongings. Or, lose them.

Anyway, that being said - go take a look at the "gun" thread. Protect yourself and your property.

However - I do apologize, no offensive intended.
