    Loy Krathong

The Chao Phraya River is the main focus for celebrations with bridges and buildings decked out in bright lights for the occasion. This year I will go there.

    Do you like Loy Krathong?

    So so.

I'm not much into crowds. Especially Asian crowds. But it is about the tamest of Thai celebrations and nice to go down to the local khlong with the kid. Or beer garden with anyone that will go with me.

Do you get a day off from work? Or at least get to wear traditional costumes to the office and take 1 trillion selfies?

This gets more cringeworthy by the day.

Rural KK is quite nice, the city is a bit too block designed for me. Reminds me of American city blocks in its layout.

Same as most then. I'm the opposite. I traveled for NYE and Songkran in my first year here.

    That was a lesson learned.

For the past nine years it's been either staying around home or overseas for both of them. Bangkok is actually quite nice at New Year as everyone has buggered off.

You may be in for a surprise as the country is in mourning.

Let's hope it lasts until after Songkran.

I was in Bangkok for Loy Krathong in the seventies. I did not even know about it, when I booked the flight. I liked it a lot then, peaceful crowds. One major drawback, plastics were the rage at the time and they floated huge amounts of non biodegradable junk. I have heard they abandoned that folly quite quickly.

I was at the Bangkok Zoo which had opened for that night. Then to a street carnival, where I was the only farang, as far as I could see. They had a ferris wheel of maybe 5m height that was hand driven. Nice memories.

The markets have mostly black and white lanterns this year. Not cheerful at all. Makes me feel sad.

That is a bit sad. There's going to be a few weepy Thais letting them off.

I think the drunken violence will come during Songkran (even more than usual).
