    Friday 16th March 2007
    Music Festival Ready to Start.
Yet another press conference relating to the Pattaya International Music Festival 2007 took place, this time on Thursday evening, at the Pattaya Indoor Stadium in Soi Chaiyapreuk 2 in Jomtien, just a day prior to the commencement of the extravaganza.
The conference was chaired by Khun Suwit, the Minister for Tourism and Sport, who was flanked by a number of other dignitaries from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Pattaya City Hall, RS Promotions, MTV, and Grammy, most of whom were wearing brightly coloured shirts to get with the festival theme.
Once all the usual speeches were dispensed with, the performers from the various groups who will strut their stuff over the weekend at the festival, including Girly Berry, Clash, Sek Loso, Potato and Golf-Mike, among others, were herded onto the stage for a series of photo opportunities.
On Friday morning members of a Korean band, named Parun (which probably means ‘loud noise’), went out to Nong Nooch Gardens where they were greeted by hundreds of their loyal fans. The band members were hoisted aboard a couple of elephants in order to avoid being crushed by the throng. It’s not certain what the elephants made of all the fuss, although it’s not an experience they are liable to forget.
The music festival continues until Sunday 18 March.

    Saturday 17th March 2007
The Pattaya International Music Festival 2007 begins.
The much anticipated Pattaya International Music Festival 2007 kicked-off in the grounds of the Pattaya Indoor Stadium on Friday Night, and as expected, the crowds numbered in their thousands to see some of Thailand’s Top Thai bands and singers perform on the two sound stages erected at the location. Once the opening formalities were over with, the fun could begin and on the first night of the Festival, bands such as Girly Berry, Tata Young, Clash and Golf Mike performed to the crowds.
On a serious note, the sale and consumption of Alcohol has been banned and security was visibly tight with checkpoints around the stadium to ensure that no one that could potentially cause trouble would be allowed to enter. The massive security operation utilizing the services of Banglamung Police, the Tourist Police and the Royal Thai Army was clearly effective with no major problems inside the stadium. There was one incident of note after the concert had finished where Police found a handgun concealed in the seat of a motorbike belonging to a 15 year old boy. There were a total of 89 arrests for mostly minor infringements.
A reminder to everyone that the Festival will continue on Saturday and Sunday nights from 6pm until Midnight and if the first night is anything to go by, it is well worth a visit.

    Checkpoints Working At Music Festival

    Checkpoints Working At Music Festival

While the Pattaya Police were at their checkpoint in front of the entrance to the Grand Music Festival, they spotted a suspicious group of teenagers so searched them to find a gun.

At 11.30 pm on 16th March, many police officials were out at checkpoints to prevent crime that might occur on the first day of the International Music Festival. Police Colonel Santi Chainiramai spotted a pickup truck with 7 teenagers inside who were acting suspiciously, so asked them to stop and made a search.
A gun was found under the seat next to the driver – loaded with 6 bullets, which Rungrot, aged 15, confessed to owning. All were taken back to Pattaya Police Station immediately.
The owner of the truck and driver is Phongthep, aged 20. This group stated that they came from Chonburi to see their favorite band at the concert. They didn’t bring the gun to commit crime – they just had it for protection. Their excuse being because they were not from Pattaya, they would have something to protect themselves if they were attacked by local gangs.
The police did not quite believe their statements and will go through their records whether they have been involved in any crime before or not?

Security Problems dominate the disappointing Pattaya Music Festival 2007.
The Pattaya Music Festival is over for another year and initial reports from those who attended the event suggest it did not compare to festivals from previous years. Security was tight but there were still incidents within the stadium including one incident where a young man was stabbed but not seriously injured. Sporadic fights kept security officials busy throughout the festival which for many spoiled the event which featured some of Thailand’s top bands and singers such as Silly Fool, Ebola, Endorphin, Potato, Clash and Tata Young. On Sunday Night as the Festival came to an end, it was almost inevitable that a serious incident was going to occur, as various motorbike gangs left the area with the intention of continuing the party elsewhere. A Police checkpoint outside the venue led to numerous arrests and the discovery of a fake gun and knives.
One major incident occurred at around 3am on Monday Morning at the front of the Ambassador City Hotel in Jomtien where three people were injured in a shooting incident which Police believe was gang related. Questions will now have to be asked relating to issues of security and if the local Police, army and volunteers were fully prepared for the thousands of people who attended the event.
